Slick, Sticky & Smelly

in Odds & Ends Stories

The one night trip from Philadelphia to Miami included a same day meeting on arrival. My upgrade had come through so I printed my boarding pass at home. My first meeting of the day was at the airport lounge in Miami. All good.

I stepped into the cabin and discovered that 3-C was now the first row of coach. Ok, no big deal; I travel all the time and this sometimes happens. It’s only a 2+ hour flight and the flight is empty. I take off my suit jacket, turn it inside out and place it in the overhead. The cabin smells faintly tropical and I sit down.

We take off and just before landing I stand up to stretch. Uh oh. The entire seat was coated with some type of suntan lotion and my suit pants now have a dark, oily stain from my behind to my knees. The flight attendant tells me this happens “all the time” on return flights from warm weather destinations because the vacationers lather up before they get on board to moisturize and maintain their tan.

Upon landing I reach into the overhead to retrieve my jacket. It’s sticky and smells rancid. There was a slice of pizza up there!

I point it out to the flight attendant and get this reply “that happens because the passengers have to bring food on board and they are mad at us. They are really awful. You really should have looked carefully. We always do!”
