violence

After booking into the flight for my family and me (wife and two children, 8 years and 22 months old), we proceeded to the departure gate. After getting this far we noticed that 6 passengers on the same flight were very drunk and had problems walking and talking, but were allowed to board the flight to Bodrum. No attempt was made by Servisair or Sky Airlines to halt these passengers as a risk to the other clients on board.

Shortly after take off we had to make a quick descent back into Dublin Airport due to an air pressure issue that caused great pain to my 8-year-old son and 22-month-old baby boy. No explanation was made as to what was going on.

After landing we were kept on the plane, and then after a substantial wait – again with no update by the airline staff – we were told to exit the aircraft and wait in the terminal again. Most vendors were closing down at this time as the last flights were leaving.  Servisair again provided very little in the way of customer service, providing nothing to us of updates.

Eventually an offer of vouchers was made to my family which we could not use due to no vender being open in the departure area. After a very long walk back to the terminal we found a vendor that was open, but they only stocked alcohol!

The 6 passengers who were already drunk decided to stock up on 4 bottles of lager beer and 2 bottles of wine EACH, and then when finished opened the duty-free liquor they had purchased.

A Servisair rep appeared and told us at midnight that all passengers were to assemble at the gate at 1:20am for more information as the repair was done and we were waiting for a slot to take off. At 2:00am the rep had not yet arrived so I went looking for her.

I found the check-in rep who booked us into the flight and demanded to know what was going on. He told me the flight was ready to go as the repair had just been completed, contradicting what the Servisair rep said! He also informed me that hotels were being booked and were then cancelled! Asking for milk for my baby, I was told none was available and to ask on the plane.

The 6 passengers who had been drinking could barely walk and were allowed to board with not so much as a question being asked, which made the other passengers including myself take note to avoid these people at all costs.

While we waited to leave I politely asked 3 different flight attendants for milk for my baby. Two of them just walked past me and the third put her hand up into my face to dismiss me completely. I then asked the passenger beside me to see if I was invisible due to the rudeness that was shown to me.

Two of the six drunken passengers passed out on the flight and no trouble was had. However, 4 of the 6 started a fight about an hour outside of Bodrum after again being served alcohol by Sky Airlines flight attendants. This was a very serious fight with two men in the party becoming covered in blood. My wife and children were very, very scared as to the outcome as we could not leave the situation. A lot of screams and children crying was heard all over.

After a few moments a flight attendant came out to try to break it up and lead one of the men to the front of the plane. After 10 or so minutes the man proceeded down the plane, this time with a plastic fork or knife in hand to cause more injury to the second drunk passenger. Not only was the fight bad enough, but walking a person dripping with blood through a plane was extremely dangerous due to possible infection from spilt blood on the surrounding areas!!!

While all of this was going on there was nothing coming from the captain of the plane to assure passengers to calm down, nothing from the head flight attendant to again reassure passengers, and it was swept under the carpet. Having been a long time flier and business flier I know that on other airlines these passengers would have been arrested and deported back to their country. We as passengers fully expected this, but again nothing was done. The 4 people involved in the fight were let off the plane and allowed to mix with passengers while going through passport control.  They were then allowed to proceed out into the main terminal and onwards in their journey.

I am completely disgusted at the way in which my holiday had started. No one had taken responsibility for looking after passenger needs while being delayed. No one in Servisair or Sky Airlines wanted to stop drunken passengers from boarding. After landing, Sky Airlines did not want to get involved in stopping these drunks from interacting with families who were clearly distressed about the events that had taken place.

My family was distraught at the sight of these scenes; having an 8-year-old and baby not only hearing but witnessing such violence is something that will live with them for a long time. Both my 8-year-old and wife have had nightmares about this incident while on holiday, and all of us were extremely worried and upset at the thought of coming back for fear of the same people being on board again!

I think it was 1999. I was living in Virginia at the time and the week before Christmas I had to travel to Los Angeles for some business. I had traveled from Greensboro, NC which was only about 90 minutes from home, and US Air had an easy connection through Charlotte to get me to LAX. This was a trip I was making about once a month for almost a year and I had never had any issues.

I was scheduled to fly home 3 days before Christmas, but due to some difficulties with my client in LA I had to stay an extra day. I called US Air to reschedule my trip and I was unable to be confirmed on a flight the next day. I should have known this was going to be the start of a huge ordeal.

So, now two days before Christmas, I am hanging out at LAX waiting to get confirmed on a flight, and after spending a whole day there I was unsuccessful in getting home. Another twist to the story here is that my wife and I were planning on driving to Columbia, SC on this day to visit her family over Christmas. I told her to make the trip without me and I would somehow get down there. Of course, US Air was unwilling to re-route me to Columbia without charging me several hundred dollars, and at this point I was unwilling to give them any more money.

So after another night at an airport hotel, I was once again back at LAX trying to get back east. I was finally confirmed on a flight from LAX to PIT, then a flight from PIT to GSO. I had also secured a one-way rental car from GSO to Columbia, SC, so with a little luck I was going to make it there before the Christmas festivities would begin.

The 757 that we were to take to PIT was coming from PIT and it was late by three hours due to snow in PIT. I knew that these three hours may be detrimental in me making may connection to GSO, but I was still hopeful I would make it.

The plane finally arrived and we quickly boarded and before long we were underway. I was seated in first class with only a few other folks. I was alone in my row with a couple sitting right behind me. I had noticed while boarding that the man sitting behind me seemed to be drunk and while we were boarding he continued drinking beer. I was surprised the first class flight attendant was letting him drink alcohol as he was obviously drunk. Only a few minutes after takeoff, while we were climbing out of LAX, this guy started yelling at his wife/girlfriend, and he was threatening to hit her. I really couldn’t believe this! I continued to listen and decided that if he got violent I was going to have to step in. Just a few minutes later he did hit her, and it sounded like a slap to the face of the woman. Right away a small, very frail looking male flight attendant appeared and told the man he was going to have to stop hitting this lady. The passenger, who was a large muscular guy, then pushed the flight attendant and threatened him. The flight attendant ran away to the front of the plane. I then unbuckled my seat belt and turned around and said, “Hey Pal, I’m trying to get home for Christmas, and you beating people up is going to seriously mess up my plans, so settle down or we’re going to have a big problem.”

Now I’m a pretty good sized guy myself, but I am not one to pick a fight. But I really needed to redirect this guy from beating up this lady. He then said to me that he was “coming up to kick my ass.” As he started to stand I decided I needed to myself so I could at least defend myself, but I was also thinking I needed to subdue this guy somehow. Just as we stood the Captain appeared out of nowhere. Now I don’t know what the rules are for those guys leaving the flight deck, especially during climb-out, but there he was. He got right up in the guy’s face and told him very boldly, “You will sit your ass back down and not make another sound. If you do I will land this plane and you WILL go to jail! Do you understand me?”

The only thought I’m having at this point is if this guy beats up the Captain then we’re really in trouble. But, this guy immediately sat down and very wisely decided he needed to chill out. The captain looked at me and thanked me for stepping in. He then told the guy that he was assigning me as this guy’s baby-sitter and if I reported any issues then he would land the plane wherever we were and he would be arrested. He told the guy if he was nice for the rest of the flight he wouldn’t press any charges. The guy said he understood and after the lady was relocated to another seat he never uttered another word.

When we arrived in Pittsburgh, the Captain announced that we needed to stay in our seats until he said it was OK to get up, and as soon as we got to the gate police came onto the plane and arrested the guy. I was very happy to see that, and the pilot was smart to lie to the guy earlier which kept him calm. After the guy was escorted off in handcuffs the Captain went out of his way to thank me for helping him and he told me that he should have landed in LAX but he really wanted to make it home for Christmas too. I thanked him for not landing and handling the situation the way he did.

My flight to GSO, the last one of the night, was still there when I arrived. I called the rental car counter from the plane (this was back when there was still phones in the planes) at GSO and begged them not to close until I arrived (one hour after they were supposed to close). They were nice enough to wait on me and after driving all night to Columbia, I made it there by 6am, just in time to open presents. I made a promise to myself that I would never travel for business again the week before Christmas.

My husband and I were flying from Boston to West Palm Beach. The seats across the aisle were empty. At one point more than half way into the flight a woman came and sat in the aisle seat next to my husband. She was clearly off of her meds – scratching her head, moving irrationally, talking to herself. She was seeing things and acting very strangely.

We tried to ignore her but she kept trying to provoke my husband. He stayed very calm. The flight attendants noticed what was going on and watched her. Suddenly she punched my husband out of the clear blue and said “If he doesn’t kill me, I’m gonna kill him.” What she didn’t understand was that in the post 9/11 era you simply can’t threaten to kill people on an airplane. So… she was immediately surrounded by attendants, off-duty airplane personnel and beefy male passengers. When we landed we were greeted by Florida’s finest and the FBI who arrested her for a long list of federal charges. They wanted statements from us but we ran like hell as we didn’t want to end up in some federal trial!

I was flying early Christmas Day morning from PHL-ORD-SEA on United. I overheard the father in the seat behind me say to his young son, “Look closely out the window, maybe you will see Santa Claus.” I rolled my eyes and cringed knowing what would soon follow as the flight was delayed and the sun slowly started to rise. I overheard the son whine to the father it’s getting light out and I haven’t seen Santa, and then he started to cry. Thirty minutes later, the sobbing subsided and soon after we are up and on our way.

It started with a few thumps and soon cascaded into a full force assault as the little boy was kicking the back of my seat. With a smile, I kindly asked the boy’s parents to stop his actions and for 15 minutes I had peace. Then the kicking began again, with more force than before. I caught the attention of the FA and she asked the parents to control the little boy. Again I had peace for 15 minutes before the “fun” resumed. Showing my Christmas spirit, I stood up (actually crouched because the overhead bins make it impossible to stand) and very quietly mentioned to the father that if his son kicked my seat again, I would rip off the boy’s legs and beat the father to death with them.

The shocked look on the father was priceless, the mother immediately complained to the FA who gave me a thumbs up; the rest of the trip was quiet and peaceful.

I hope the physiatrist bill won’t be excessive when I’m blamed for this child’s failures the rest of his life.
