Mr. Wideload

in Portly Stories

I was flying from Albuquerque to Phoenix on Southwest. Now, Southwest Air has the “persons of size” policy in that if you can’t fit with the arm rest down, you need to buy another ticket, but they only charge you for that other ticket if the flight is full. I was in the B boarding group and I saw the beginnings of the C boarding group come up to stand. This guy was 400 lbs and I knew he only bought 1 ticket. So I get onto the plane and I grab the LAST window seat. Within seconds, the last aisle seat is taken. The FA’s say on the loudspeaker, “nothing but middle seats, this flight is full, so please pick the first seat you see.”

So Mr. Wideload comes on the plane and I see him, and I smell him. He’s got sweat stains on every roll. I waved down some random person in front of him to take the middle seat so I could block in my row. Mr. Random took that seat and he looked at me and then looked at Mr. Wideload and said, “Good quick thinking.” So Mr. Wideload stands in the aisle, looking for a good spot to sit down and there’s just 1 seat 2 rows in front of me and they’re not looking too happy. So the FA comes up to the section and is asking for a volunteer to give up their armrests and personal space so Mr. Wideload can sit.

Surprisingly, no one raises their hand to say, “yes, please cram me in.” Then the FA comes up and says to me, “Sir, would you be able to give up your seat so we can accomodate this Gentlemen?” I lied and said that I needed the window seat because I get air sick. After a few minutes, they finally forced a guy 4 rows up to give up his aisle seat and move to the middle to Mr. Wideload could take the aisle seat, and that arm rest moved up.

Then to top it all off, Mr. Wideload started coughing during the flight, these long wet, hacking coughs.

This happened on August 4, 2009. I was flying from Baltimore to Peoria, IL, on Delta Airlines, for a skating contest. The first leg of my flight (connecting in Atlanta) went without incident. But that’s when things turned sour in a hurry.

The plane to Peoria left Atlanta about 45 minutes late. We get about 3/4 of the way to Peoria when the pilot comes on the speaker and says, “I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings. but we’ve been instructed to return to Atlanta.” Soon as I heard that, I knew it was gonna get ugly.

We got several stories, that there was heavy weather, that there was an equipment problem at the Peoria airport. They put us on a plane to Chicago-Midway, getting in at about 8:45 pm local time. After about 45 minues in the baggage claim at Midway, they load us on a bus for the 2 1/2 hour ride to Peoria. We arrived at the Peoria airport at 12:10 am.

End result: my flight to Peoria took about 13 hours. Just about the amount of time it would’ve taken in a car.

I would like to commend the lady who stayed at the rental counter way past closing to give rental cars to those of us who had reservations. Saved me from having to pay for a cab to get to my hotel.

I had an afternoon flight from Denver, CO back to school in Massachusetts last Christmas break. I checked in with plenty of time, carrying on my laptop and guitar case. When I got to the gate to board the plane, the attendants told me that my boarding pass had not been properly stamped, and asked if I had somehow snuck through security. I told them no, but they did not let me onto the plane. They informed me that I would be a security threat if I was allowed to board. They had to call a TSA official from the security line to come check my bags “just to be sure” that I didn’t have any contraband.

An hour later, after the plane was long gone, a security person finally arrived, and didn’t even open my bag. She quickly opened the guitar case, which apparently appeared “suspicious,” and directed me to an office to reroute my flight. Once I found the office, I told the representative what had happened, and asked to take the next flight to Hartford, no matter where it connected. He wouldn’t let me. He claimed that since I already had a ticket that connected in Philadelphia, I would have to take the next flight through Philly, which didn’t leave until 10 pm. I told him this was unacceptable since the shuttles to my school ended at midnight, but he completely ignored me.

I finally got to Hartford at 1 am and spent the night in the airport waiting for the 7 am shuttle. In retrospect, it was pretty funny to be considered a security threat, but at the time it was absolutely unbelievable

Ok so I have saved up for the girl’s trip all year and I am finally going to Italy for 16 days!!! Yea!!! I live in Bermuda and we have to take a plane from BDA to New York JFK with a 10 hour layover inbetween before we get on a plane to Rome, so we have some friends coming to the airport to meet us.

So the trip started badly when I get a phone call from American at 3am that the flight will be delayed due to the crew having to stay on the ground… ok fine thanks for waking me…

We get to the airport and check in, all’s fine. We get on the plane and start to taxi out, then we stop and proceed to go back to the terminal. The pilot says, “sorry folks there seems to be a slight problem with a blinky lite regarding the breaking system it will be a few minutes so sit tight.” Ok no prob I don’t mind a few min layover. About 30 min later the captain puts on a movie “My Life In Ruins” (this should have been a sign). About halfway through the movie the captain says that the flight has been cancelled but he cannot let us off the plane due to an emergency flight that just landed. An hour later we get off the plane and the airline says that they can give us some options – 1) go to Boston 2) go to Atlanta 3) go to Philly. None of these will get us to New York in time for our connecting flight to Rome which was on another airline.

So after trying to get something that will get us close to New York, they offered us a trip to Newark at 4pm which would have gotten us to Newark at 5 and then have to take a cab to JFK for 7 in rush hour traffic… ha!!!

Our saviour JetBlue came by and said that they have a plane leaving now to JFK and it will get us there in plenty of time to make our connecting flight. The catch… we would have to pay an additional $300 to get on. The original round trip on the other airline was $300 so now I would have to pay that for a one way ticket!! We took the offer thinking we will get a refund from the other airline after the trip was over giving that it was a mechanical issue.

Ok so we get to JFK and check in with the other airline and get to our gate which is so crowded that there were no seats and the A/C was clearly not working hard enough. So we sit on the only available spot on the floor and wait for our flight. And wait. And wait…

Our flight was supposed to leave at 7pm, at 8:30 we get an announcement that our plane was not working properly so they were trying to find a plane and it will be a while (notice no time mentioned). Ok so I figured it will be a while and I go get some food and walk around the terminal to keep me busy. I bought a book and went to sit back down on the floor.

Nine-thirty comes and goes, and by 10pm we finally get the announcement that they will start boarding the plane. Yea! We get on the plane and I swear that they used a domestic plane to go to Rome; there was no leg space at all and it was a full flight! During the flight over I tried to sleep as much as possible cause I am claustrophobic and there were too many people and not enough space. My friend said that they only came by 2x with drinks so we were all terribly dehydrated and cranky when we eventually got off the plane 9 hours later. I can clearly say that I will never fly with that airline ever again unless my life depended on it.

Once I got to Rome it was an amazing trip and I can’t wait to go back.

The Textbook Mechanic

May 24, 2010 Airplane Stories

I get to fly a lot on different chartered flights for work, sometimes these are ok because of the service. But all in all they generally suck. Its one of the things you learn to expect when the lowest bidding contractor wins hands down, and the person booking the tickets never has to take the trip. [...]
