I have done a lot of traveling and for the most part haven’t had any major issues, other than delays and missed connections. I have been on a couple of flights that were an absolute nightmare.

Nineteen seventy-eight, I’m 17 years old, and flying from the US to take my grandfather home to England. He’d had a massive stroke, and needed a great deal of assistance. As his left side was paralyzed, I had to zip him up after he went to the bathroom. Since I was meeting relatives I hadn’t […]

Flying Cathay Pacific direct from Hong Kong to Toronto one August. Let’s count all the things that went wrong: 1. I sat behind two babies, next to a couple with two babies, in front of one baby, and to the right of yet another baby across the aisle. None were enjoying their flight.

I was waiting to board my last flight from JFK to Orlando after a long journey home from Bangkok. I was tired and hungry, and just wanted to see my family after being away for three months. The Delta flight was delayed due to our aircraft’s late arrival. An hour went by. The plane arrived, […]

It was the end of May 2010 and I was going with five other people on a medical mission trip to Kenya, right after graduation from my nurse practitioner program. We were flying Delta from Atlanta to Nairobi via Amsterdam. About an hour or so after we took off, the captain got on the PA […]

Flying from Nashville to Columbus via ATL. Outbound flight was 1 hour delayed for mechanical reasons. Fine, still had enough buffer in my layover for my connection. Board the plane and there was a miscommunication between the pilot and ground crew; not enough fuel was loaded (there was bad weather and needed extra in case […]

After spending a wonderful four weeks on a road trip along the east coast of Australia, we boarded our Emirates plane in Sydney to Munich via Dubai. After an uneventful 12 hour flight nearly all the way to Dubai, we learned that we were unable to land in Dubai due to fog. We would instead […]

in Airplane Stories

“African aviation has the worst safety record in the world.” Over many years and millions of miles flying across the length and breadth of Africa, I had a true appreciation of that seemingly innocuous phrase. Yeah, well it’s still safer than crossing the road, isn’t it. Is it? Depends. One of the things it depends […]

I love flying and airplanes. At least I have except for one flight. I was taking an afternoon commuter flight into Chicago’s O’Hare airport from a small town in Illinois. It was the end of a business trip and I was relaxed until the pilot of this relatively small airplane turned on his mike and […]

It was January 2004 and I had just boarded an Emirates flight from Dubai to Düsseldorf to visit my family in Germany. I am not a happy flyer and hate watching take-offs, so I always ask for an aisle seat. On this flight I was seated in the aisle seat on the left side of […]

This tiring trip took place at the end of the summer of 2007. We had been at Warsaw Okecie International Airport. Our original trip was to fly with Wizz Air to London Luton airport, then from Gatwick to Toronto Pearson. We started by going to Terminal One in Warsaw looking for our flight. After waiting […]
