During spring break, I had a direct flight from Philadelphia to Austin that was about 3 hours long. The flight was full so the middle seat next to me had to be filled. My luck – I get the guy that thinks it’s okay to put his mp3 player on full blast so that it’s like sitting next to percussion/drum thumping car with the windows open! I spent nearly the entire flight with my fingers in my ears trying to get some sleep!!! What a jerk.

Did you ask him to turn it down? Did you call a flight attendant? Believe it or not, over-loud headphones are considered a disturbance and a flight attendant WILL talk to a passenger about it. I've been in exactly your situation, but I managed to sleep because I spoke up.
If you don't speak up, and you just sit and take it, you've only yourself to blame.
Look on the bright side………that idiot will be deaf in his middle years.

Well… you can also hope he's an mp3-addict… the kind that gets himself killed at a crosswalk 'cause he's not looking and can't hear the car horns…
People like that guy are the reason I think I should buy stock in hearing aid companies.
