Flights From Hell flies you into the crazy skies with stories about the adventures and anxieties of airplane travel.

Commercial airline travel takes us far, far out of our comfort zone. We're herded into cylinders that zip hundreds of miles per hour at 30,000 feet, subjected to security screenings, confronted with delays and lost luggage, rushed to catch connecting flights, constrained to small seats, scrunched up with strangers, and surrounded by pathogens. Is it any wonder we end up becoming a bundle of raw nerves by journey's end?

October 12, 2007 Airplane Stories

Back in the 80’s I flew frequently between Las Vegas & San Fran (via Oakland Airport). One of my last flights home to Vegas was memorable. We started down the Oakland Airport runway, our airplane (2-engine) was gathering speed, we launched into the air, and just as the wheel gear pulled up a large shudder […]

First Class Ticket To Disaster

October 12, 2007 Airplane Stories

I was on an Alaska Airlines flight from Orange County to Portland. I had flown this route several times a year as my family lives up in Portland, and at the time I was living away in Newport Beach. Since I was a frequent passenger, I racked up many air miles, and was usually able […]

The Bearded Passenger From Hell

October 10, 2007 Weird People Stories

This is my “worst-ever, round trip flight from Pittsburgh, PA to Seattle, WA” story. The departing flight to Seattle was a non-stop flight, which I prefer. As I was already seated on the plane, awaiting everyone else to board, a man in the seat next to me kept jumping up and sorting through his enormous […]

Foot Fetish

October 10, 2007 Weird People Stories

I travel a lot for my job, so I am used to crazy, strange, smelly, obnoxious, etc. people on flights – I’m usually ALWAYS the one who gets seated next to them. However, I was not prepared for what I experienced on a routine flight from JFK to Miami International. I sat in my aisle […]

If You Think Commercial Air Travel Is Bad…

October 5, 2007 Odds & Ends Stories

Airline travel is, at best, uncomfortable, but traveling for the military is unbearable. The government contracts with a civilian company to fly large amounts of troops where they need to go. Most people would say that is better than flying on a cargo plane, but most people have never flown with the military. I was […]

Immobilized By A Reclining Seat

October 5, 2007 Seat Stories

I was on a British Airways flight from Miami to London, and my friend was seated behind one of the most obnoxious passengers I have ever seen. He was somewhat surly when awake, but he almost immediately put his seat all the way back in her lap and did not move for the entire seven […]

Reclining Seat Vs. Long Legs

October 5, 2007 Seat Stories

I was on a flight from Dallas to San Jose, CA. The pilot had just turned off the fasten seatbelt sign, and the man in front of me tried to recline his seat. I say tried to, because I am six feet tall, sitting in a window seat, and there was no way he could […]

Crushed Legs Ruins Rest

October 5, 2007 Seat Stories

I boarded a plane and sat in my seat in second class. Wanting to relax from a very long day, I put my seat in a reclining position. Suddenly the man behind me let out a blood-curdling scream – MY LEGS! MY LEGS! GET OFF MY LEGS! All eyes in the cabin were on me. […]

Stinky From Seatmate’s Sweat

October 4, 2007 Odor Stories

This was truly my flight from Hell. I was working in Nashville looking to get home to San Diego after being gone for 2 weeks. First Leg: Nashville to Las Vegas, I did not do my normal Southwest flight but rather my admin set me on some other funky airline where they assign you seats. […]

Gassy Passenger

October 4, 2007 Odor Stories

I was on a night flight from Bangkok to Shanghai and was catching some sleep when the guy beside me started to burp loudly (and to remind you some burping comes with smell), next he started snoring loud enough for the world to hear, and to increase my ordeal he farted! That was the worse […]

Girlfriend’s Armpits Beats Passenger’s B.O.

October 4, 2007 Odor Stories

On my way back from Germany in 2003, I had the pleasure of being seated next to a man and his family. It took only seconds after he sat down for me to realize that evidently he did not believe in deodorant. And for the next 13 hours, with every shift in position he made, […]

First Come, First Served

October 3, 2007 Animal Stories

Last year was my first time in the United States (I moved to Florida after I graduated from college), and for Christmas, I decided to go home to the Bahamas to spend the holidays with my mother. Since it is only me and my pet cat living in Florida, I thought it would be cool […]
