Flights From Hell flies you into the crazy skies with stories about the adventures and anxieties of airplane travel.

Commercial airline travel takes us far, far out of our comfort zone. We're herded into cylinders that zip hundreds of miles per hour at 30,000 feet, subjected to security screenings, confronted with delays and lost luggage, rushed to catch connecting flights, constrained to small seats, scrunched up with strangers, and surrounded by pathogens. Is it any wonder we end up becoming a bundle of raw nerves by journey's end?

Cart Clogs Aisle

September 3, 2009 Attendant & Pilot Stories

I was on a Spirit Airlines flight from Detroit Metro to Reagan International to go to a wedding. The flight time was less than an hour and we were told that after 9/11 any flight coming out of or going into Washington, DC can not have anyone be out of their seats within a 30 […]

Plane Bucks and Bounces Like An Angry Bronco

September 2, 2009 Airplane Stories

I’ve been a frequent flier for longer than I can remember.  I’ve seen just about everything, and experienced just about everything.  With that in mind, some things that I either take for granted, or just let pass, are a true hell for others.  So here’s a story about a flight from hell – one for […]

Don’t Allow Cell Phones

September 2, 2009 Flying Hell Commentary

I could submit some stories but I am writing ahead of time hoping they will not allow cell phone usage on planes. It is entirely annoying enough having to listen to other people’s conversations in airports. I understand business people having to have conversations or if there is a delay and they need to inform people, […]

Is Airport Screening a Joke or What???

September 1, 2009 Airport Stories

I’ve been examined, metal detected, my luggage has been opened AFTER being approved by the screeners, tested for explosives, pulled out of line for nothing, delayed and made to feel like a criminal without one reasonable reason. No wonder I don’t like to fly any longer. I understand security but…. We went through an hour […]

Disabled And Inconvenienced

September 1, 2009 Airport Stories

This story has less to do with an actual flight and more to do with the peculiar mayhem I had to endure during a stopover in Detroit. I was flying from Hamburg, Germany to Halifax, Canada and had to change planes in Amsterdam and Detroit. I don’t fly very often, and this was only my […]

Reclining Seat Solution

August 31, 2009 Flying Hell Commentary

I travel a lot and with expense controls find myself having to work in economy more often than not. Reclined seats and laptops don’t work. So here is a solution for you. Most drop down tables drop and have two supporting aluminium “Legs.” Lower your table. Take the two magazines: Flight and Duty Free. Fold […]

Upset At United

August 30, 2009 Delay/Cancellation Stories

Anyone that has flown out of Denver knows that United is always back logged in the ticketing area. It doesn’t matter the day, time…it’s a log jam. I have arrived 4 hours early for international check-in (Denver to Belfast 3 flights w. International connections) and security — to walk through the door at 7am to […]

Thirteen Year Old Learns The Complexities Of Flying

August 29, 2009 Delay/Cancellation Stories

About 3 years ago, I flew on a major US airline from Chicago-O’Hare to Sacramento by myself at the age of 13. I was going to see relatives and stay with them for a week. After checking in at ORD (and passing security with a 12 oz bottle of liquid- it was after the “liquid […]

Hayseed Clan Intrudes Into Passenger’s Space

August 28, 2009 Portly Stories

So I’m boarding a flight from Frankfurt to Philadelphia with the three other members of my band and all is going well. Everyone looks mellow, no kids, no obese people no—wait a minute…OH NO!!! Coming down the aisle I see a large party of people, most of whom are obese and with many small children […]

FBI Man

August 27, 2009 Passenger Stories

I was returning from a nonprofit training seminar. I can’t recall the airline I was flying with, but I remember very well the trip. A man in his mid to late 30s got on the plane. He was a big guy, about 6’3″, wearing a baseball cap that said “FBI” in large fuzzy letters. He […]

A Valuable Lesson

August 26, 2009 Odor Stories

Over the years I have logged thousands of hours sitting on planes and it was on one of these flights that I learned where not to sit, if at all possible. I had made a last minute change to my plans so I had to jump on a plane at the last minute. Not too […]
