Flights From Hell flies you into the crazy skies with stories about the adventures and anxieties of airplane travel.

Commercial airline travel takes us far, far out of our comfort zone. We're herded into cylinders that zip hundreds of miles per hour at 30,000 feet, subjected to security screenings, confronted with delays and lost luggage, rushed to catch connecting flights, constrained to small seats, scrunched up with strangers, and surrounded by pathogens. Is it any wonder we end up becoming a bundle of raw nerves by journey's end?

Men Of The Cloth

November 19, 2009 Passenger Stories

Back in the mid-1990’s, I boarded a Delta flight from Helena, Montana to Salt Lake City, pretty much the only way to get anywhere else in the world if you lived in Helena, Montana. I was going to visit my parents in Georgia. Little did I know that at the time, the Pope was visiting […]

Beastly Brat

November 18, 2009 Baby & Kid Stories

I was on a flight from New York to Los Angeles and as I board the plane and walk up to my seat, I notice a young boy – at least 2 years old – sitting in my seat. I walk up and say to the woman next to him, his mother, that I believed […]

An Expensive Cup Of Starbucks

November 17, 2009 Delay/Cancellation Stories

I left SNA Orange County Airport on United Airlines with my final destination “Fargo, Dakota.” Our connection is through Denver. We landed on time and it was a nice flight to Denver. I proceeded to my departing gate connecting to Fargo, and waited as other passengers were waiting. Our departure time was 3:45 pm. Then […]

Chutzpah Guy

November 17, 2009 Passenger Stories

I’ve flown hundreds of thousands of miles yet the oddness and stupidity of my fellow travelers never ceases to amaze me. On a recent evening flight from Houston to Tucson I observed a man teetering on the edge of insanity. First, when we were taxiing for take-off he rang his flight attendant call button to […]

Family Split Up For Convenience Of Another

November 16, 2009 Baby & Kid Stories

I was flying from Hartford, CT to Orlando, FL with my one year old and two year old daughters. Even though my youngest qualified for a free seat, I had purchased three first row seats together, so we would be close to the restroom, and I would have the extra room. Imagine my surprise when […]

Where They Can Stick It

November 16, 2009 Delay/Cancellation Stories

My husband and I flew on WEST JET to Vancouver one weekend to attend his daughter’s graduation. The flight out was grossly late (I have found out that their flights are delayed approximatley 30% of the time – Hawaiaan Air has a 99% success rate of departing on time). Our return flight was 1:00 p.m. […]

Stinkin’ Lincoln

November 15, 2009 Odor Stories

Waiting in the Charleston West Virginia airport boarding lounge I noticed a tall bearded man talking loudly to the TSA personnel. I noticed he had a large stovepipe hat like the kind President Abraham Lincoln wore. Later, seated on the plane, I noticed the same individual approaching my area. He was dressed in a 19th […]

Flights Grounded For Days By Fog

November 15, 2009 Weather Stories

Note: I’m flying from Roanoke, VA to Boston via Philadelphia. This particular Friday, every airport above the Mason-Dixon line is swamped by this huge winter storm system. as you can guess, nearly every flight into Roanoke gets canceled. But that’s not the worst part. Because Roanoke has a regional airport, the most innocuous weather systems […]

The Idiot Parade

November 15, 2009 Flying Hell Commentary

I have been a frequent business traveler who flies out of D/FW on a weekly basis for the past 7+ years. The first six years were actually very nice. No issues with security other than the occasional long line; no problems with passengers except for a screaming baby now and then or the chronic snorer; […]

Annoyed About Autistic Adolescent

November 13, 2009 Odor Stories

I was flying from Orlando to San Francisco with a layover in Vegas. The plane was coming from Miami with a large, nice family already on board. They were about twelve strong and took up four rows across the aisle from me. There was an assortment of children and adults, and an autistic boy who […]

November 12, 2009 Odds & Ends Stories

It wasn’t really a hellish flight, but its a great in-air story!! I was heading home to Sarasota FL, from a direct flight from Israel. I was lucky enough to get some prescription sleeping pills for the 12 hour flight. I took them as I got on the plane and according to the instructions on […]
