Miss Psychotic

in Passenger Stories

Well I could have guessed people of a less stable mind would have to travel too. Last September I finally witnessed this. It all happened on a nice late September day flying on an Emirates flight from Dubai to Düsseldorf, a 6 or 7 hour flight. Thank God it was on a day time flight.

I was seated with my wife in one of the last rows on a Boeing 777 where they have 2 seats instead of 3 on each side. In the middle 4 seats in the same row as us were seated an Indian or Pakistani family. Nothing out of the ordinary on an Emirates flight.

While we were already watching a movie and getting annoyed over the pre-flight messages which I remember come up at full volume, we suddenly heard someone weeping and crying loudly a few seats away.

One of the daughters of said Indian family was having a complete mental breakdown. She grabbed the seat in front of her and started hitting and kicking it, crying and screaming, grabbing the remote of the ICE and hitting the screen and chair with it. Let me tell you, I now know that is made of some durable stuff! You should also know this was a grown woman, not some child.

Watching it is funny at first, like the Germans say “Schadenfreude,” but it soon got annoying. Note we were still standing on the tarmac. The flight attendants came by every now and then telling her parents to quiet her down (!), which of course only helped temporarily.

After another 10 minutes an announcement was made by the crew notifying us that we would be delayed since there was a passenger that had to get removed from the airplane. I could see people around us getting relieved, and we couldn’t wait until she was escorted out. But when the attendants finally came, they handed out ear plugs! And another half hour later there was an excuse for the delay announcement. Apparently someone wanted to leave the airplane because he just took notice that his father passed away. And the airplane started to taxi!

That was it. This meant we would be sitting a few seats away from Miss Psychotic for the remaining 7 hours of the flight. She completely freaked out as soon as the airplane started to take off. Thank God she was wearing a seat belt. It was a good thing the airplane was not full so passengers in her immediate vicinity could be placed elsewhere. We were still sitting 3 or 4 seats away from her when our meals were served; unbelievably she also got a tray and her family had to feed her. This went well for a couple of minutes until the tray was sent flying down the aisle and her and her family’s drinks got spilled all over.

She also pulled off the tie of one of the attendants; now I know why they wear fake ties. She grabbed onto other attendants too with her nails. I felt pity for them and still can’t comprehend why she wasn’t removed from the airplane altogether in the first place.

Everything ends, as gladly did this flight from hell. Afterwards they were quickly rushed out of the airplane. I heard her again at the passport control, where people quickly led them to the front of the line.

You see the strangest of people on Emirates flights!

The Indian or Pakistani or whatever she is was probably just over-reacting from sitting so close to you Swedish or South Africans or whatever you are.

Hugh May 4, 2011 at 4:27 am

Substantial…your douchebaggery has hit new and previously undiscovered heights.

Substantial May 5, 2011 at 12:41 am

Hugh dearie…it's not as if your opinion matters a flying feck now little man, is it 🙂

Hugh May 9, 2011 at 4:38 am

It matters just as much as yours does. So, please keep your dickheaded comments to yourself, asshat.

Hugh May 12, 2011 at 5:56 am

Really? That't the best you can come up with? Of course, continue attacking me, rather than disputing your own douche-baggery. You are a hateful, venomous, prejudiced, little man. I pity you.

Substantial May 12, 2011 at 7:12 am

Let's see, the best you can come up with is a repeat of "douche-baggery" and repeating my reference to you as a little man.
I've certainly pushed your buttons, haven't I 🙂

Hugh May 13, 2011 at 4:30 am

Please don't flatter yourself. It would take far more than posting on a website by some anonymous troll to push my buttons. Commenting reagrding things you know nothing about (my size, and mental acumen) are far from hurtful to me. I just find you pitiful. When you have to troll anonymously regarding hate for races (Swedish, S. African, India, Pakistan) and attempting to mock those with learning or genetic abilities, (Down's Syndrome), it says much more about you than it does about me. Maybe one day you can interact wil real people, and move out of mommy's basement or trailer.

Jeff May 13, 2011 at 6:11 am

Hugh do yourself a favor and stop this, you are making a fool of yourself. Substantial took a swing at the OP’s racist comment “Indian or Pakistani”, one step away from saying “they all look the same to me”. Are you American? Would you like to be referred to as “Canadian or Mexican or American or something”? Thought not.
Judging by his answers I doubt that Substantial is even reading more than a word or two of your posts, but as he put it he certainly is pushing your buttons. You keep taking the bait, and it’s making you look very foolish. Quit while you’re down.

Hugh May 16, 2011 at 4:57 am

I didn't see the OPs post as racist, maybe I was reading it differently. Yes, I am American, and I could certainly see someone confusing a white American and a Canadian, or a Hispanic American and a Mexican. Other than location, what;s the difference between an American from New York or Vermont and a Canadian from say, Toronto? Last I looked, India and Pakistan are rightnext to each other, and someone unfamiliar with cultual dress, etc, could easily confuse an Indian and a Pakistani. I found Substantial's post racist, and I commented on it. He isn't pushing any buttons, like I told him, it takes more than an anonymous posting on a website to get me going. I thought we were allowed to reply back in posts. I will stop responding to him, but only because I have nothing left to say to him. IMO, he has shown his ignorance.

Substantial May 16, 2011 at 6:21 am

Yep, I sure did push your buttons little man. your blathering, over-emotional responses here prove that. And you can't disagree with Jeff's point that you are making a fool of yourself 🙂

Weetniet May 16, 2011 at 7:57 am

Sometimes it is unhandy that the internet is so anonymous, don't you think? If people had to sign with their real names, instead of nicks, I'm sure that Hugh would not flame that much here! How difficult is it to stick to just discussing a FFH story and not flaming to OP and other commenters!?

Hugh May 17, 2011 at 4:33 am

My intention was not to flame anyone. I perceived substantial's flame as prejudiced and a troll, and I commented on it. Perhaps I read the OP post differently than others, but I didn't see any racism in it. I did see some in substantial's post. I wasn't trolling or flaming, at least that wasn;t my intention. If I read things differently than others, perhaps I was mistaken. I'm a big enough person to admit that a mistake may have been made. Weetniet, read my other posts on here…I comment both for and against all kinds of posts, I don't flame. Enough with the personal attacks. I notice your post doesn't stick to commenting about FFH either.

Hugh May 17, 2011 at 4:36 am

Oh yes, you sure got me. I can barely type this through my tears. Please Mr. Anonymous internet poster, please stop.

Look, I didn't see racism in the OP, I did see it in yours and called you on it. If I perceived things wrong, I apologize. If I did not perceive them wrong, and you intended to be racist and prejudiced, I stand by my posts. Fair enough?

Substantial May 17, 2011 at 7:04 am

Says Hugh who recently wrote "because I have nothing left to say to him". Seems you can't resist the chance to show off your buffoonery at every opportunity 🙂

Weetniet May 17, 2011 at 5:12 pm

There's no racism in OP's story and Substantial's first comment on this story was indeed prejudiced. It is good to know that you, Hugh, do not troll.

However, the most important thing, Hugh, is that your insults (towards Substantial) makes you look foolish. (Jeff already pointed that out.) Why all that anger? If your goal would have been to let Substantial know that racist comments are unacceptable, you completely failed. The discussion was about your insults and your anger, instead of the first comment by Substantial. This is because you allowed Substantial to press your buttons! In general, insulting is not a good way to get your point across.

KayStal June 22, 2011 at 1:46 pm

I’m with you Hugh. Pointing out that they were Pakastani or Indian had nothing to do with the story at all; so why even mention it? Don’t listen to these idiots.

Internet lesson #1: Don’t feed the trolls.

Together, neither of them can string together a coherent thought process, nevermind think critically.

madachode May 4, 2011 at 9:09 am

After about 10minutes of this I myself would have started pointing at her and laughing as hard as I can for the 6 hour flight.

Jenny May 4, 2011 at 9:01 pm

I wonder if she had autism?

KayStal June 22, 2011 at 1:39 pm

That’s what I was thinking too.

sexygal September 11, 2014 at 10:16 pm

What does Autism have to do with it?!!?

Belle May 4, 2011 at 9:30 pm

There are numerous reasons she may have been acting this way including, but not limited to having autism, being developmentally disabled, etc.

Weetniet May 5, 2011 at 3:55 am

I don't understand why the FAs allowed her to fly? Someone with a nervous breakdown isn't likely to able to exit a plane in 90 seconds (which is the time you have in case of fire), is she? Also, such people could behave in an unpredictable manner. The FAA should forbid such people to fly because they are both dangerous and annoying to the passengers around them.

The Sizzler May 11, 2011 at 9:38 am

“…flying on an Emirates flight from Dubai to Düsseldorf,…”

The FAA has no authority to implement policy on a foreign carrier transiting between two countries, neither of which are US.

jonjon May 5, 2011 at 11:12 am

Hey Weetniet the flight was from Dubai to Dusseldorf, not in the US, has nothing to do with the FAA. The U.S doesn't control everthing you know.

Weetniet May 5, 2011 at 4:25 pm

Jonjon, you are correct. Didn't think about it. (My nick Weetniet is in the Dutch language. It means Don'tknow in English.) Last sentence should have been: "It should be forbidden for such people to …" to make it more neutral.

pes May 10, 2011 at 8:05 pm

Hey Weetniet- Upside is that there seems to be now a way to get in front of the line at JFK or Newark-just act like a maniac 🙂

paul May 23, 2011 at 9:18 pm

Could we please have a new story

Salena May 26, 2011 at 5:55 pm

Hugh is right!
Substantial-you are just one stupid person on this earth!
Weetniet- have some respect for people with mental disabilities? You don’t know what that girl was suffereing so keep your mouth …..

Weetniet June 1, 2011 at 2:44 pm

I have respect for people with mental disabilities. I do not remember being derogatory to them in my posts here. What is it that you are referring to?

pes June 1, 2011 at 7:42 pm

Someone with probable mental disabilities, crying and scratching attendants? Tossing food, spilling drinks? At 30,000 feet? Salena, you fly with her. She should hae been restrained if not booted from the plane upon boarding. Why the hell should other fliers have to put up with that. So keep your mouth…..

Rabbit July 26, 2011 at 4:14 am

Hugh & Substantial, SHUT UP! thanks…….

Substantial May 13, 2011 at 5:44 am

Ooooh, a "mommy's basement" flame. Diddums!

Substantial May 23, 2011 at 4:09 pm

Lol, Hugh doesn't troll? Just go back through the forums and see the rubbish that he writes here. He's nasty, vitriolic and stupid.

PKB June 22, 2011 at 9:28 pm

Kay, your own comment would have been coherent if you'd understood that there is no such word as "nevermind". Try your sentence again using "never mind" and you would actually come close to making sense. HTH
