“Picked Over” Luggage

September 21, 2009

in Flying Hell Commentary

My daughter had a laptop and expensive camera taken from her luggage on a flight from NYC to Tampa. I once had a bag of expensive candies opened, eaten and the empty container put back in my bag. I don’t think most luggage gets “lost” – I think it gets held over for an airport employee to pick over it and take the good stuff. Oh by the way, you have no recourse with the airline if items are stolen.

Luggage gets honestly lost and misdirected all the time. What would possess someone to put a laptop and expencive camera in their checked luggage? Have youever seen how they handle your luggage? Watch the folks loag the hold of an aircraft sometime. I certainly wouldn't want to entrust them with anything valuable especially if its fragile.

EVERY airline will tell you, if you pay attention, NOT to put computers, cameras, or anything of value in your checked baggage.

While there is no excuse for stealing from baggage, you have to remember that the airlines are pretty explicit in terms of being careful what you pack in your check-in bags. And when dealing with NYC or Philly you need have double up on your vigilance. Sorry to hear you r daughter had her stuff filched.

Never put valuables in your luggage… You should carry those on, or ship them to yourself at your destination.

Sorry you had things stolen… but… just like you do at home by locking your doors, you need to take steps to protect yourself from thieves, and you didn't do that.
