Why Is She Even An Attendant?

in Attendant & Pilot Stories

I was flying from Charleston, SC via Detroit to Sault Ste. Marie, MI three flights, in August. The first two legs of the trip were routine. In Detroit we switched to one of those little turbo prop puddle jumpers. We had two intermediary stops even though all on the plane were going to the same destination.

The single female flight attendant looked to be in her late 50’s and very unattractive. From the minute we stepped aboard she was unruly and snapped at everyone. No wonder she was assigned to that plane.

Unfortunately we had to sit at the gate for about an hour before taxiing away. During this time we had no air conditioning in a stifling hot aircraft.

Our flight attendant, instead of acknowledging the situation, decided that it was her opportunity to bitch about the airline, NWA, and repeatedly urged all of us to write to NWA and complain about the lack of air conditioning equipment at this gate.

Finally we were in the air. I settled back to try and cool off. The 10,000 foot chimes rang so I got out my ear buds, and MP3 player. After listening to a few songs the attendant interrupted me and proceeded to dress me down rather loudly for listening to my player, WITHOUT HER PERMISSION. When I protested her very public verbal dissing she got even more angry and threatened to forcefully take my player! By the way I’m in my 50’s, not a 16 year old kid.

I just shut up and put it away, which seemed to please her. Luckily for me the entire plane was filled with friends and co-workers! We should have opened the door and kicked her out, at least she would have been cool.

why does it matter that she was "very unnatractive?" are all flight attendants supposed to be beauty queens? I thought that line of thinking went away years ago.

what a bitchy traveler you are.

I agree with the poster – we pay high enough airfares! So, why shouldnt the airlines filter out the old and/or unattractive FA’s (female AND male); some of the ones on Delta I wouldn’t have serving in a dog show. Unless they were one of the contestants.

You know how many lawsuits they'd have? The EEOC would be flooded with complaints!

The days of the glamorous "stewardesses" are over. The airlines took away pensions and retirement benefits and employees are not quitting or retiring. Seats available have been decreased and the airlines are no longer hiring. Sorry folks, all you're going to see for a while are senior, unattractive, flight attendants.

Well, I see that all you folks here are just youngsters when it comes to flying with "stewardesses" of the good ol' days in the air. Their requirements: Look like one of the New York Rockettes, be a regestered nurse, and best of all, single. The only drawback then, though, was that they were not allowed to date passengers. (But if you talked fast, and had money, you could usually reel one of them in for a

dinner and a little dancing.)

Aw for the good ol' days when the planes were pulled through the air, not pushed through the air……..
