The FA Salesperson

in Attendant & Pilot Stories

I flew on US Airways to Costa Rica. I regularly fly down to Costa Rica, usually on Delta. I hadn’t flown US Airways in awhile, but the tickets were cheaper. Never Again. NEVER.

Shortly after we took off, a man in the aisle next to me ignored the rules prohibiting electronics–that is, he turned on his iPod. The flight attendant came over and said loudly, “Turn that off! You don’t want to be the one to crash the plane, do you?!” We all stared at her. There is nothing worse than the flight attendant on your flight saying the words “crash” and “plane” in the same sentence.

After that she proceeded to spend most of the 5 hour flight on the loudspeaker, selling things. US Airways credit cards, duty-free catalog items (she gave us the full list, including descriptions of the jewelry and perfumes), the food, drinks–everything was for sale and there was no way to escape the announcements broadcast over the intercom. She also walked up and down the aisles, hawking the credit card. After five hours I had had enough. I still had a napkin and a cup and I stopped her as she was walking by, so that she could take them and put them in the trash before we landed. She said, “That’s not my job,” and she thrust her pile of credit card applications at me, to show me what her job really was–salesperson.

Horrible. I’ll suck up the cost next time and fly another airline.

Don't complain here. Complain to US Airways. Flight attendants generally *hate* being made to peddle crap at the behest of the company, but they have to or they'll be disciplined. Spirit went so far as to require their FAs to wear aprons advertising alcohol — what is this, an airplane or a bar?

every airline has those "annoying" flight attendents, not just US Airways. I fly them all the time and never had any problem
