Snoopy Seatmate Caught on Video

in Passenger Stories

I was recently on a flight and was trying to get in contact with someone back home for a ride from the airport. The man next to me was looking at my computer (I could feel his eyes!). Whenever I looked at him he’d look away really fast – I decided to film it as I thought it was really funny! The video can be found here:

That's a funny video! Privacy is a luxury lost to you when you travel. There are just people who don't know how to control themselves from time to time, the poor snoopy man was probably bored during the flight. This will definitely open the eyes of everyone not to be too trusting even when inside planes.

I've had the same type of situation happen over the years. My solution is to shift the screen to an angle making it more difficult for the snoopy person to view. It also sends a subtle signal to the person that I kind of know what they are doing.

I will note one thing- we are, by human nature, going to look at motion. Something moving on a screen will attract attention over a static view of a seat or bulkhead. That doesn't justify what happened here, but may explain it.

The majority of motion in this instance was the guy peering into the guys computer.

I don't suppose it might occur to anyone that it's a violation of the so-called-snoop's rights to be video-recorded without his consent and have that video placed on the Web with the sole intent being ridicule. Any lawyers out there care to comment… or possibly cash in?

In the cabin of an aircraft you are considered "In a Public Area". Therefore there is No expectation of privacy and any recorded or photographed videos or images are therefore "Public Domain". He can try to sue, but it'll be thrown out.

We can all laugh as I did too but I believe that the honest truth is the guy looking over is not a villain…its just human nature. Is it annoying to have a stranger look over you yes…but have we all done it ourselves… be honest… I think most of us would need to say yes. They also sell those things that go over your screen to prevent people from viewing your screen from the side.

Maybe he was pissed that you had a bright screen on when he was trying to sleep. The cabin looked dark. As he couldn't sleep he had nothing else to do but watch your screen.
