Loose Lipped Flight Attendant

in Attendant & Pilot Stories

I fly US Airways Munich-Philadelphia about three times a year. My last flight involved a flight attendant who greeted me, my husband and our 18-month old toddler with, “Oh no, a baby? You gotta be kidding me!”

During the flight she continued to share with us that the IRS was auditing her for tax evasion and that her mother’s dead body remained in the house for three days during a hot spell. During a bout of turbulence she pushed the beverage cart to her partner and yelled loudly for all to hear, “This is too dangerous! I’m not doin’ it! I’m sitting down!”

At about four hours into the flight (when many are asleep or at least relaxed) she screamed into the intercom to announce that she would be offering water. Really, you’re going to startle everyone like that just because of water?

Finally, upon descending into Philadelphia, she yelled, “Geez, is this flight ever going to end?”

Actually your story is kind of funny, but she does seem a little off.

I have to say, the other things are a bit off for sure but her comment about your beloved child? I agree with every fiber of my being.

I travelled extensively for business, I was away for all but maybe 5 weeks a year. Whenever I saw a baby in the departure lounge? I immediately got up to see if I could change my flight because I have NEVER had a flight with a baby on board where we weren't treated to out of control screaming, hollering, crying and that wonderful smell of baby poo…..and let's not forget that wonderful smell of baby vomit……

Ah, poor baby. Is the life of another human being getting in the way of your selfish life!?! Maybe you should move to an uninhabited island so as to not have to mix with lowly society.
I fly a lot too. Although I can't say that it is enjoyable being next to a crying baby, it is life. People with children need to go places as well. I have seen many mothers or fathers trying very hard to keep their children as quiet as possible, but it isn't an easy thing to do. I feel sorry for them.

No wonder you were away for all but 5 weeks a year – you must have spent the rest of the year waiting in airports for flights without babies rather than actually travelling. Except for very small commuter planes, I don't think I have ever been on a plane that didn't have at least a couple of babies and/or little kids on board. They usually cry a bit here and there and then go to sleep. That's why they invented earplugs – "problem" solved.

Hear, hear! Kids and planes aren't a happy mix. Perhaps people shouldn't be having kids if they're in a situation that necessitates a lot of traveling. Or perhaps they should make arrangements whereby traveling with the kid(s) is minimized. For instance, why fly the damn kid to the grandparents; why not fly the grandparents in instead? Or why fly for vacation instead of driving somewhere nearby?

Wow, really??? I've flown extensively with babies on the same plane, and the only unpleasantness I can ever remember was when a family flew with their toddler, who very obviously had a stomach bug (kid must have puked a dozen times between waiting in the lounge and touching down). Sometimes babies will squawk a bit during descent, but it bloody well HURTS when you can't do anything to equalize the pressure in your ears.
