Passenger Punishes Bin Hog

in Luggage Stories

A Flight from Hell where I was the problem (for someone who deserved it). Now I unburden myself and plead for the forgiveness of the readers.

In the early 90’s I was on a flight from Houston to Burbank which had a stop in Phoenix. I was in an aisle seat in coach one row from the bulkhead and was one of about six passengers who were travelling through. After those bound for Phoenix had left, the new arrivals began boarding.

The second person on was a self-important businessman who stuck his carry-on into the bin opposite me and then walked to his seat in one of the back rows. As the plane was nearly empty at that point, he couldn’t use the excuse that he was afraid the bins in the rear wouldn’t have space.

Ultimately the flight was nearly full, and the man who ended up in the seat near me was the last to board. There was no space in the bins except at the very rear of the plane. When we landed he would have to wait for all the rest of us to disembark before he could get his bag, and he had told me he had a tight connection. Because we were already over 30 minutes late departing from PHX, I didn’t say anything at the start not wanting to delay us anymore, but the selfishness of the bin hog irritated me.

My confession is that when we landed in BUR and everyone was standing, I took the offender’s bag as though it was mine. I hit the first bathroom in the terminal and left it in a stall, assuming someone else would either turn it in or rifle it. I suspect the self-centered jerk never hogged a bin again.

(Yes, I know it was passive-aggressive, but he was a LOT bigger than I. In any case the statute of limitations has long since passed!)

wow thats a bigger asshole move on your part

not only could you have told a FA that the carry-on belonged to someone at the rear and see if they could do something about it, you could have just put it in the aisle and then the FA would either ask who's carry on is this or they would have put it away somewhere

so not only did you steal the bag and told no one, you also put another person in hardship, you sound like a great person, what if he had important documents that he needed? passports? ID?

your worse then that businessman

so committing a crime (theft) justifies an annoyance?

yes the businessman should have had his carryon by him, and all, but under no circumstance does it warrant having his possessions stolen

and if you really think that it was ok then you should really think about it

Sure, the bin hog was a complete d-bag, but you took it to a new level. What you did was illegal, it was theft. You knowingly took something which wasn't yours. You don't know what was in that bag, you don't know if the bin hog had a tight connection, or was travelling to visit a dying relative, or making a business meeting which could be saving a thousand jobs. You were out to punish him without knowing the facts. There were a thousand other ways you could have handled the situation, and all of them would have been better than what you did. Sure, we all fantasize about doing things to "get back" at a-holes, but what you did was a truly horrible act. Posting about it, and almost bragging about your actions just compounds the level of your d-baggery.

Folks, this looks like a troll. I’ve seen urban legends like it. I recommend we ignore it.

I agree with Adam. I don't believe the post.

I think that you feel bad about what you did and that's why you wrote the story. You can't undo the terrible thing that you did, but you can atone for it by doing something that helps others. Once you do that you'll be able to move on.

Apparently not. On the other hand… I fly out of a small airport, where we see the same people, often. Very often, the guy descrbed above flies at least weekly, and behaves that way because he knows he can get away with it (Laazzzzy). I see ths scenario more than I'd like to. I wouldn't have done what the OP did, but I've been tempted. AND SERIOUSLY, what an lazy a$$hole. If he boarded early, and is in the back, he would have been better off having his "valuable items" close to him.

Wow, it isn't even your actions to the bin hog that are the worst, abandoning a bag in an airport could cause a bomb scare inconviniencing thousands of people.

In my eyes your actions were far worse than his. He may have been a bin hog, but you're a common thief.

Better would have been, when you saw the bin becoming too full, grab his bag, and move it to the back of the plane where he is sitting, allowing those passengers sitting in that area to use their own bins.
