Projectile Vomiting Problem

in Odor Stories

A group of friends and I were flying from Tampa to Las Vegas. As is our tradition whenever we make such pilgrimages to Sin City, we immediately started drinking on the plane even though it was morning time. To save on costs we supplement drinks we purchase on board with beverages that we bring along with us.

During the flight a woman from our group who had enjoyed more than her share of adult beverages stumbled down the aisle to use the rear lavatory which was located near where we were sitting. When she returned to her seat a strong stench of vomit permeated from the lav. Soon afterwards another passenger entered the lavatory and immediately exited. He complained to the flight attendant that vomit was everywhere. The FA peeked inside and quickly closed the door, then posted the facility as being closed. She announced that people would have to use the lavatory located towards the front of the plane.

Curious about how bad the situation was, I got up and peered inside the lav. Orange-colored vomit covered everything – walls, floor, sink and toilet. The color made sense since my friend had drank a number of Bloody Marys and Screw Drivers.

It was apparent to everyone in our section of the plane that my friend was the person who had the projectile vomiting problem. Some of the passengers started demanding that she clean up the mess that she made. However, she was too drunk to do anything about it – or to even care for that matter – and she eventually passed out, leaving others without a convenient restroom, and worse of all having to endure the nauseating odor.

Maybe you and whatever members of your group that weren't too drunk should have made an effort to clean the bathroom. It's inconsiderate assholes like you and your group that helps make flying unpleasant for others. Too bad the airline didn't ban you from flying with them ever again.

I don’t see it as the responsibility of the other adults in the group to clean it. They seemed like they drank, but not to the point of incapacitation. I believe that the offender should have been fined a cleaning cost or something for her actions. I also believe the FAs should have kept an eye on the drinking going on as well. If one of my friends or acquaintences did this, I would feel bad, but wouldn’t necessarily feel an obligation to clean it up. If it were my child, then perhaps I would. On another note, I go to Vegas several times a year, I love it. I just don’t understand the need that some people have to get too inebriated to function when they go there. Sure when I’m in the casino or at a show, I have a couple of drinks, but not too many to render myself helpless. Grow up people.

I do see it as a group responsibility. They bought the alcohol as a group and drank as a group. They lacked the responsibility to take care of their friend.

Had this taken place in a private party, would they have let this person drive home?

I can see your point, but I still disagree. I don’t think allowing someone to drive drunk is a reasonable analogy to this. It seems like they knew they didn’t have to drive anywhere and could “let loose” None of the others got to the point of vomiting. The lack of control was on one person. Like I said, I see your point, it’s valid, but I must still respectfully disagree.

Disagree. The OP starts off by saying it's their habit to immediately start drinking, even though it's morning. Sounds to me like the whole group is a bunch of douchebags who can't control themselves. How long is the flight that you can't wait until you get here to get sloshed? You INCONSIDERATE DOUCHEBAGS. Every single one of you in that group should have been caned.

I Agree that they sound like a group of people with impulse control, and they need to grow up. Since only one member got to the point of losing control, perhaps caning the entire group is going a bit far.

I don't get why the OP felt the need to sneak a peek to look at the filthy mess. What did he expect to see? And to say that the color of the vomit "made sense". Does he think he's an artist or something?

Very true, I hadn't thought of that. Ewwww.

Classy, that's what this is. People like that shouldn't be allowed out in public without a keeper.
Nasty, real nasty.

How do you "bring beverages along with you"?

Just curious…last time I tried to go through security with a Diet Coke, I had to throw it away.

And, this is rather disgusting…and, made the flight more miserable for the fellow passengers…seems like your group is a little self-centered…and, for you to find pleasure in it enough to share the story…speaks volumes of you.

If you get the tiny vodka bottles that are at the front of liquor stores and put them in the standard Ziploc bag you put any other liquids in, you can bring them on with your carry-on luggage.

As a psychology major, I would say that there's a disturbing group dynamic going on with the friends on the plane. At one time societal pressures discouraged uncouth behaviors, but now people feel emboldened to let it all hang out in an anything goes cultural environment.

WTF? Disturbed group dynamic? Those folks were just out to have some fun and one of them overdid it. Why is it that psych majors always seem to be nut jobs? Stick to reading your Freud and leave the rest of us alone.

Something's wrong with this story. As others have pointed out, you can't bring liquids through security. You also can't buy large containers of liquor in an airport and bring them on a domestic flight. Flight attendants are pretty good about not serving somebody who's inebriated to the point described in the story. If the pax were really that drunk, I"m sure the flight crew would have marshals waiting for them on arrival — which the OP conveniently doesn't describe.

You can bring liquids through security. You just can't exceed 3.4 ounces per container. That quantity is equal to 2 shots of liquor. You're allowed to bring as many such containers as can fit into a 1 quart-size clear plastic zip-top bag. I imagine that one can cram a lot of alcohol into a 1 quart bag. Also, the OP said that they supplemented drinks that they purchased with drinks that they brought with them. The drunk woman must have added alcohol to tomato juice and orange juice that are provided on flights.

I was thinking the same thing, then I thought of Duty Free shops. They are past security. Just a possibility.

Not too long ago I saw a guy whip out a bottle of Jagermeister from his carry on (and wasn't the one-shot size either). He drank almost all of it on the flight. He just kept asking for glasses of ice. Eventually he got too talkative and folks informed the FAs. They cut him off (of ice) and warned him he could be arrested.

I don't understand the need to drink so much on the plane by this group in the first place. You need to be able to function soberly in case there are any problems on plane (such as needing to do emergency landings or evacuations). If you're smashed, you put everyone around you in worse danger.

Next time these sleazeballs find it necessary to stray out of whichever trailer park they live in they should just take the bus.

Honestly this is just inconsiderate and disgusting they should have removed all of them from the plane and ban them from flying. Being a regular traveller iv seen more than a fair share of drunkend air travelers and I cannot see what’s so great about getting drunk on a plane!? I think all alcohol should be ban on airlines 1. For the consideration of fellow passangers 2. As a safety measure, if that plane was in trouble how would that woman have been able to function properly in an emergency?? Pathetic honestly

As rude and disgusting as this might have been, some people are alcoholics and that is a disease…not an impulse control problem. Of course most alcoholics wouldn't have wasted the liquor by vomiting.
