No Respect Given to Obese Passenger

in Portly Stories

Two years ago I booked a flight from New Orleans to Sydney Australia via LAX with United. Now, I know that by most people’s judgement I am considered a “slob” because I weigh 522 pounds. But there is a difference between people who eat a lot and me because I have a thyroid condition that I can not help!

On the flight from MSY to LAX I received MANY bad looks that made me feel very uncomfortable. I was sitting in the aisle seat and this “man” in the window seat kept wanting to get up, thus making me have to get up and stand in the aisle. He does this 6 times and I believe he did it on purpose because he had a smirk on his face. I have bad knees and it was very uncomfortable for me.

Once in LAX there was a wheelchair but it was too small, so I had to wait 25 minutes for another one to wheel me to my connection as passersby gave me bad looks. I kept trying to tell people that I have medical issues but nobody cares about obese people and our feelings.

Once on the plane to SYD (very nice 747) I found my seat which was in the center row. The 2 people on the end of my row didn’t want to let me in so I went to the other side and they were rude also. Finally, with the intervention of a surly FA, I was seated. I told the FA before I sat down that I would need 3 seatbelt extenders and she just rolled her eyes at me. They supposedly could only find 2 extenders. I told her that I had a colostomy bag and that I could not have anything tight around my waist. I have flown many times, so I know how many extenders I need! The FA tried telling me that if I couldn’t use 2, that the plane would be held up while they hunted for another one. I refused based on my medical condition and the FA brought me another one after a 45 minute wait. It was only 45 minutes and you would have thought it was 4 hours the way people were acting. In an act of retaliation for me “holding up the plane” (for all the inconsiderate passengers), my row companions refused to allow me to raise the armrest on either side which made it a very long and uncomfortable 14 our flight.

About 2 hours into this VERY long flight my colostomy bag needed changing. I changed it the best I could at my seat because of my knees and because it was a long walk to the lavatory. I very neatly put the soiled bag in one of the vomit bags. I asked twice for the people on my right and left to pass it to the aisle so that someone who was headed to the lav could dispose of it, but nobody was considerate enough to do it. After about 12 hours 4 soiled colostomy bags had been stashed in the back of the seat in front of me. The “passengers” started complaining and here comes the surly FA again. She left and came back with a biohazard bag and blue disposable gloves like I was contagious. I was so humiliated!!! They also refused to give me more than 1 meal while they gave others 2 or 3.

I have written several letters to the customer service of United and they just ignore me. DOES ANYBODY HAVE RESPECT ANYMORE?!?!?!?!!?

They have to put gloves on and have biohazard stuff on and a bag for human contents it has nothing to do with you, what happens if they get sick? It's liability and I would hope no one would touch strangers excriments without proper equipment

That's pretty disgusting though, you need to go to the bathroom and throw it out yourself and not give it to other people, be responsible……. It seems that you want people to be considerate to you but you want them to do something you should and throw away your feces be considerate don't make them put up with your shit at the seats ESP when they need to eat

The seatmates shouldn't have to raise the armrests for you and be uncomfortable and have your body touching theirs

The laboratories are not a far walk

With some planning, you can make a flight much easier for yourself and other people as well: arrange with the airline in advance to get two seats on an aisle near a lavatory.

I'm calling bullshiat on the OP.

There is so much wrong with this story that it is obviously totally fabricated. If you weigh 522 pounds, then you wouldn't even fit in a coach seat regardless if the arms were raised or not. If you weigh that much, then you never would fly 14.5 hours from LAX > SYD. What reason do you have to go there? Sightseeing? Pick a place that is closer to your home town and enjoy pictures of SYD from your computer. I've lived in SYD and if you weigh 522 pounds, you can't enjoy anything about the city because you'd have to walk everywhere.

Get a life.

FAKE!

Reply

Jody October 4, 2010 at 5:22 am

I too call "fake" on this one. There's no way a 500+ pound individual will fit in one coach seat, even with 3 seatbelt extenders.

Large or not, I don't blame your seatmates for refusing to allow you to put up the armrests. You purchased one seat, YOURS, and that doesn't give you the right to spill over and take a portion of their seats as well.

Reply

Don October 4, 2010 at 5:34 am

I'm calling FAKE as well. Too many issues to be a real story. If by chance it IS real, then the inconsiderate one is the poster, not those around. With that kind of medical issue, there needed to be a WHOLE lot more planning and working with the airline. Not just buying a cheap coach ticket and hope everyone around you "understands".

Even if this story may be fake there is no excuse the way you guys are acting. I know people who have medical conditions that causes them to gain weight and they are some of the kindest people I have ever met. When I see these people get picked on by bullies like some of the posters here I cannot help but shake my head.

Reply

Hugh October 4, 2010 at 6:46 am

I know very nice heavy people as well…NONE of them would expect a complete stranger to carry a filled colostomy bag. Y'know, I get your "peace" thing, but you get ridiculous with it. If this is a true story this man was inconsiderate…PERIOD. Why should his seatmates be expected to be uncomfortable for 14.5 hours while he has the armrests up, and is pouring into THEIR space. You need to grow up and show some sense.

No one is bullying him, we are throwing the BS flag, because this post seems to be made up and consists of EVERY annoyance we endure due to heavy people on flights, just simply told from the point of view of the heavy person.

You want to talk kindness…how kind is it to those on the plane to be expected to carry someone else's feces in a bag? How kind is it to have to share space which YOU paid for with a person who should require at least two seats…for 14.5 hours. If this is true, the OP is one of the nastiest, most clueless, most inconsiderate louts EVER. Certainly not one of the nice, friendly overweight people we all know.

This story is utter and complete rubbish. And if you'd read other threads discussing the topic of interactions with (in PC parlance) "weight challenged" individuals, you would know that many times the issues are brought on by the individual's own sense of entitlement when the expect others to bear the burden of their personal issues. Don't tread on my space and I won't get in your face.

Giving the writer the benefit of a really big doubt and assuming this story is true (which I do not believe). I wish to point out his/her own rudeness. If you are as large as you state, then you should have purchased the requisite number of seats instead of hoping that your seatmates would be kind enough to share their seats by allowing you to lift the arm rests. It is very rude of you to assume they want you (a complete stranger) touching them with any part of your body that would expand past the armrests.

As for the bodily wastes, in the world we live in today we realize that there are tons of germs, bacteria, etc., that you may carry in your bodily waste that has no affect on you but could affect someone else. It is rude of you to assume that anyone other than yourself or your mother, would be willing to touch a container of your bodily wastes without having the appropriate protective gear on.

Furthermore, with you having so many physical difficulties and having problems getting up and down, perhaps you should request the window seat before your next flight. And perhaps the guy did not have to urinate as frequently but just needed to escape due to feeling claustrophobic since I’m assuming at your weight you were spilling into his seat.

Adam October 4, 2010 at 8:59 am

Not only that it's an FAR that only one seat belt at a time can be used 3 is never allowed to many breaking points… Let me hand you a bag of my poop and you walk around with it …. See how you like it… This is the crazy one if you are that's large you should hav bought more then one seat you know your issues and you need to deal with them bot make everyone else

Reply

jen October 4, 2010 at 10:43 am

Totally don't believe it…but for the record-

If you change your colostomy bag that close to me, I will puke on you. If you've taken all the vomit bags for your crap- literally- the puke will be ON you.

My seat is my seat. You should have bought an entire row if that's how much room you need.

Ever heard of an "over-share"? I don't care why you're so big. I have my own concerns. Zip it.

Why didn't you have a caretaker with you if you needed this level of assistance on your flight? Or perhaps get a seat(s) on the aisle next to the lavatory? It seems like (if this story in fact actually happened) that there was some poor planning involved.

Asking random passengers and even the flight attendants to handle your human waste questions your respect for them. Getting upset when they try to protect themselves from disease by wearing appropriate safety gear is completely unacceptable.

BWAAAAAAAAA this is one of the funniest most poorly written fake stories I've ever seen on here. 522lbs in a single coach seat….ain't gonna happen. Four colostomy bag changes in 12 hrs????? Really??? The OP obviously doesn't know jack about the subject and from a family experience I most assuredly do. Considering how much the OP claims to have weighed it would be impossible to do the change at the seat anyway. To whoever wrote this….next time pick a subject you actually know something about…..BS.

Ever noticed how these large folks (from the U.S.) are that way because of a medical condition? Why aren't there more of these people in third world countries where food is consumed sparingly or in limited supplies if that?

Reply

Yeah. With the inferior medicine in the third world, they usually die.

The old thyroid condition line! What a crock! It's always either that, or a genetic condition! New flash, if you consume less calories than you burn, you'll lose weight. "Thyroid condition" or not! Plus, you go to other countries, places where Americans originated, and practically nobody is obese. If it were genetics or a thyroid conditions, people in the countries of our roots would be just as fat!

Attention Fat Stinkers.

There is an airline that caters to your bloated asses.

Fat Bastard Airlines has 40″ wide seats and an Airwick infusion system to keep you from smothering each other as you fart and belch through the skies.

A 20 gallon deep fryer assures that you will be able to maintain or even increase your girth during your flight.

Soda is only served in 1 liter bottles, and water or diet soda is verboten.

So next time, please stay with your kind, and fly Fat Bastard.

Renee December 22, 2010 at 9:48 am

They should have a pig pen in the cargo hold for special folks like you. Just think how fun it would be for you to be able to wallow in your own filth and then at meal time you could hog your food down out of an actual trough like you have at home. It would be nicer in the passenger compartment too since we would not have to be pinned down in our seats by your disgusting flab oozing over the armrest on to your unfortunate row mate.

People like this truly disgust me. Yes a thyroid problem CAN make you gain weight. Not 300+ pounds of it though. That’s just from being a fat lazy fuck. Here’s an idea. Stop eating those second and third helpings and maybe you will loose some weight. Would probably help with your bad knees as well. Who knows maybe you might even stop being a fat enough piece of shit to throw your own crap away.
