Flight Delay Déjà Vu

July 10, 2010

in Delay/Cancellation Stories

I was flying on American Airlines from SFO to Rio de Janeiro (changing planes in Miami) last July. When I checked in for my flight at SFO, I was told that the flight to Miami might be slightly delayed. I wasn’t worried at first, as I had a 2 hour layover in Miami. Unfortunately, what was originally supposed to be a 1 hour delay soon turned into a 2 hour delay. Two hours after the scheduled departure in SFO the flight had still not started boarding, and it was announced that the flight would be 3.5 hours late due to a mechanical problem with the aircraft. At that point I had given up hope of catching my connecting flight in Miami. To avoid getting stuck in Miami, I asked to be put on a flight the next day which the AA gate agent arranged.

When I headed to SFO the next day, there was a sense of déjà vu: according to AA, the flight to Miami was again delayed by an hour. This time the flight took off with “only” a 2 hour delay, so I was hoping to catch my connecting flight to Rio this time. The connection actually worked fine as my connecting flight to Rio wasn’t about to depart anytime soon. After waiting for 2 hours, AA told us that the jet bridge was stuck to the plane and they were calling in mechanics to fix the problem (that was midnight Miami time!). The problem with the jet bridge was ultimately fixed, and at 2 AM Miami time the plane finally taxied to the runway. At that point suddenly power was lost. This problem was solved quickly with power being restored within less than a minute.

At that time a number of female Brazilian passengers started complaining loudly, demanding tearfully to be let off “that crappy plane.” The captain had to go to the back of the plane and assure everybody that (a) the plane was safe, and (b) the gate agents had already left and it was impossible to let anyone off the plane. After another 45 minutes or so, the captain had persuaded the last holdout and the plane was ready to go.

I’m amazed that I actually arrived in Rio, albeit 27 hours later than expected.

American Airlines is an American airline, sportsfan.

People like you make me pretend to be Japanese when I travel abroad, you know that?

i'm really wondering how?? Are your parents Japanese and you just use "ethnicity" when you feel like it? If you're not of Japanese heritage, I think you need to have a talk with someone in a white coat….

madachode, last year I flew to your country (USA) from Switzerland and was delayed twice for a total of 4 hours. I guess that's what I get for flying to a first world s**t hole…. You are a moron! Do they have more of your likes in the US? I happened to vacationed twice in Rio and must say that the US has not a single city as beautiful as Rio. So, drink your kool aid and carry on about some clown who's name is Lebron.

Hey swiss cheese, switzerland was home to the WORST airline in history (swissair). In the US, our cities aren't 1 degree, or smell like cheese.

well last time i checked anchorage alaska is part of the US and that gets pretty damn cold, ever been to chicago in the winter? what about fargo?

last time i checked i believe cheese smells better then fast food, fried chicken, and other smells that are not so pleasing

at least they dont have to worry about some crazy politiceans and ones that are there for the fame and the money and have no sense of what they are talking about (palin) for example, seems like she seeks the media not letting the media come to her when there is something to report

We do have other politicians here like hilary clinton, who HATES the media, and tries to stay away from it. As for the fastfood, a stereotype. Most of our resteraunts here are good, and healthy.

Really? considering the fact that on my walk up to work from Penn station i pass 2 Mcdonalds, a Burger King, and two more unhealthy food places compared to only 2 healthy places (subway and a cafe) and if you walk two more blocks from my office there is another mcdonalds and a sbarro…….there is hard rock cafe, planet hollywood, and bubba gumps within the vacinity of my office but they aren't exactly health (just coz they are restaurants)……………….closer to home there are still less healthy places compared to unhealthy, more pizza places, a wendys, a taco bell johnny rockets

so the statement that most are good and HEALTHY is a lie and everyone knows that

Other politiceans here are not exactly the brightest apples in the bunch, they lie n are corrupt, it seems that if they are not having some sort of affair, they are hypocritcal of what they say…….the thing about hillary even though she is good at what she does, dont you think she should have said/done something to save the $100million blow job that bill had?

Uhh, that is because you're in the CITY. I live nearby in a rural area, and there there is more healthier choices.

David July 11, 2010 at 9:48 am

No I commute into the city, I live in an affluent area and there are more unhealthy places here then unhealthy

sorry second unhealthy is supposed to be healthy, didnt catch my iPhone making the change

in the town there are more pizza parlors then there should be, and the other towns around me (South Orange, Summit, Maplewood for example) have more unhealthy food choices then healthy

If i walk into town the first restaurant I come to is a Charlie Browns, a little further is Martini's and Pizzeta (they are attached to each other) and their food isnt healthy even though they "martinis" is an "upscale" restaurant

I believe the post was about flight delays, not about who's country is prettier, healthier, or what have you. To me flight delays, though happen alot , are flights from hell.
