Flipped Off By Flight Attendant

in Attendant & Pilot Stories

On a flight from Grand Rapid, MI to Atlanta we all boarded the small Comair plane and were immediately asked to get off because there were “mechanical problems.” We all went back into the gate lounge and waited for the problem to be resolved. Two hours later, we were allowed to re-board.

I was sitting in the first row (not business/first class as the plane was one of those commuter jets) and the male FA kept walking by and bumping me. I kept moving over to give him more room but he’d bump me again and say, “You’re going to have to keep the aisle clear because I’ve got to service the plane.” I’m 5’10” and weigh about 170 so I’m NOT a big person! The passenger across the small aisle from me was experiencing the same thing and when the FA got past us, he said, “Is it just us or does this guy treat everyone that way?”

Fast forward to the end of the flight and we’re standing and waiting for the door to open and the FA looks at both of us, extends his middle finger to “scratch his nose” and says, “I hope you both have a wonderful day!” The other passenger looks at him and say, “Did you just flip us off?” which the FA denied but it was so blatant that it could hardly have been mistaken for anything else!

The other passenger and I exchanged business cards as we were walking to the terminal so that we could write letters of complaint. I waited for the pilots to disembark and told each of them what had happened and they just told me to write the airline.

Both of us wrote letters to Comair/Delta and after and internal investigation, the FA denied the incident (even though two unrelated people saw it and complained about it) and nothing was ever done.

We didn’t expect any sort of “compensation” for our experience and we didn’t receive any. We only hoped that fairness would prevail and some sort of disciplinary action would be handed out, but we didn’t get that either.

how do you know that nothing happened from it? most business policies (especially large companies) will keep it in-house and avoid any privacy issues, they may have done something but you just wont klnow about it

i see alot of people scratch/itch their nose with their middle finger, but i dont complain or even care about it, i know that in the big picture it wont effect me, i just move on and continue with my life

Best response for idiots like that is to say "have a nice da-ay" in a really snotty/sarcastic tone of voice, if they report you you can say, "what? I said have a nice day!" or even better the immortal words: You Will Get Over It. Works for me every time. Or "I won't let it ruin my day" (said with a smile). Or blow them a kiss. Result of all this, you win and they stew about it. Ha!

I'm so tired of surly flight attendants with attitude and delusions of grandeur. Yeah, they are there for emergencies. But, 99.9% of the time, there will not be an emergency….so 99.9% of their job is to handle seat disputes, demonstrate the oxygen mask and bring us our snacks.

They are the face of the airline…and, when we have to go through the necessary evils of security…one thing we should have is a pleasant experience with the airline, that we choose to patronize. But, no….we get attitude, lackluster service, cancelled or delayed flights…and, the airlines and their employees, seemingly do not care….so, most of us only fly when we have to…choosing instead to do conference calls…and, drive greater distances than we would have ever considered in years past….all because of the crap service we receive.

I swear, if the employees were nicer, more presentable, had manners, smiled, and acted like they appreciated our business….the airlines would have a lot more patronage.

That's my rant.

But, to your story….a few months ago, I was on a flight, and every time the flight attendant passed, she bumped my shoulder. I am 6' 185 lbs….so, not huge….BUT, she was very overweight, with a huge derriere…I realized then and there why it used to be a requirement for flight attendants to be of a certain size…which now I guess is politically incorrect to enforce.
