Stuck Reading The Back Seat Garbage

in Portly Stories

On a recent (long haul) flight, I got stuck in a center seat between two larger sized men. I am a very small framed female, so thought I would try to make the best of it. Why is it that men have to sit in those tiny seats with their knees spread apart as far as they can stretch them?!?

One of the gentlemen (and I use that term loosely) was constantly guzzling water and Pepsi – so needless to say he had to get out to use the bathroom quite frequently. One refuge (or so I thought) was that there was a movie on this flight. When it started, I put on my headset and tried to forget about my seat neighbors. But the man in the aisle seat made that quite difficult when he insisted on putting most of his weight on the armrest (where the channel and volume controls were). I did everything I could think of to politely show him what he was doing, but he couldn’t take a hint. I finally gave up and read the seat back garbage.

I have often wondered how it is that women sit with their knees together. I just can't naturally do it. My theory is that the design differences in a male and a female's pelvis causes our legs to flop in different directions.

When my son was born and I would have him sleeping in my lap, I would honestly either tie my knees together with the sleeves of a long sleeved shirt or use a belt. Otherwise my leg muscles would get tired, then my knees would flop open and I would have an awake and grumpy baby.

It's always about the fattys. The skinny man's nightmare: Being in a window seat on the plane, empty middle seat and here comes Jabba the Hutt waddling down the aisle, ready to crush you to death for a 5 hour flight. FFaaaaaattyboombalattyyyyyyyyy

Politely show him???? Why not just politely TELL him? Smile and say “Excuse me sir, could you please lean on the other armrest? This one has the controls for the TV and I’m trying to watch this movie.” Then when he accommodates you, you say, “Thank you.” Hopefully this will work and you won’t have to get on here and write this dribble again.

If you've repeatedly asked someone "politely" to stop doing something & they can't seem to grasp what you're saying, maybe it's time to stop being quite so polite and tell the person point blank what they're doing. Sometimes you need to use a hammer (in this case, more forceful words) to get the point across to some people.
