Bathroom Door Brouhaha

in Passenger Stories

I was on a flight from New York to D.C. I got up from my seat and headed to the bathroom in the rear of the plane. I looked at the door and it said vacant. I pushed on the middle of the door to fold it in and open. To my surprise there was a young woman sitting on the toilet. I immediately looked away and said I am sorry. She gasped and slammed the door shut and locked it so that it now occupied. Unfortunately my middle finger was now trapped in the center seem of the door up to the first knuckle. The pain was horrible but I thought, OK screaming is not going to help. She is not going to open the door for me, what do I do.

At that moment a flight attendant walked up to me and says “sir are you OK, you look kind of pale?” I took a deep breath and as calmly as I could I said “She just locked the door on my finger” as I looked back at it stuck in the door. The flight attendant said “Oh my god!” ran up and started knocking on the door and yelling at the lady to open the door she was pinching my finger. The lady opened the door some and my finger slid out and started pounding right away. I sat with it throbbing for the rest of my flight. Three days later the fingernail fell out! All because someone did not know how to slide the lock on the bathroom door!

Not only did someone not know to slide the lock, someone didn't know to keep their finger away from the hinge in the middle.

Oh my gosh!!! This IS a flight from hell!!!! I feel so bad for you! I am amazed that you were able to keep it together and not yell with pain; I've had my fingers slammed in the door and it HURTS terribly!

hugh thats an easy mistake to make, even seasoned flyers do that, your not expecting anyone to be in the lav if it says vacant, unless you see them entering it or if you see them switch by unlocking it or hear the flush.

I feel real bad for you, thats gotta hurt like no other, and kudos to you for not making a big deal out of it and trying to hold in your pain so that its not a big scene, you handled it better than most people

but ouch thats gonna leave a painful memory

its a easy mistake and i am sure it has happened many times accidently, in your case that women just was unheard of, who leaves the bathroom door unlocked? i hope she at least apologized

i had somewhat of a similar scenerio, i walked in on a woman peeing in a males bathroom and she slapped me and called me a pervert, i had no idea that she was in there and didn't know anyone was in there until i turned around from the urinal to head to the sink and than in 1/2 turn bang i got slapped (she was drunk and was arrested by the cop who came in to releave himself as i was leaving)
