Passenger Chats With Celebrity Movie Producer

in Passenger Stories

I had two weird things happen to me traveling from Hong Kong to Los Angeles via Manila on Philippine Airlines. Upon landing at Manila Airport, I was enjoying the landscape of Manila as we approached the runway. I would guess that we were close enough to the ground that I would maybe be able to read a taxi advertising with 20/20 vision. All of a sudden, the pilot pulled up and revved the engines. About 2 minutes go by when the pilot announced in a shaky voice that we will be taking another pass. I never did learn what the problem was. I assume it was because two planes can’t share the same runway.

The connecting flight out of Manila to Los Angeles had more of a pleasant surprise rather than weird thing happen. I went to the back of the plane to use the restroom when I found myself standing behind a man reading a book called “Cinema in the Philippines” (paraphrasing). Dang! It was Quentin Tarantino. I had to ask him about a scene in Pulp Fiction in which he was playing Jimmy in Bonnie’s Situation: Jimmy was blasting Jules about his house not being a “Dead ‘African American’ storage” and Jules was trying not to crack up. That was either really good acting or he really was cracking up. Quentin: he was cracking up – we are good friends. I never did ask him what he was doing flying in economy or at least in the back of plane. I guess his down to earth and pleasant personality has something to do with it.
