Mouthy Soccer Mom

in Passenger Stories

I’ve been amused by the stories on here of being seated by huge or smelly people, but my worst airline experience is of an entirely different nature. I was flying from Northern CA to Los Angeles on business, so I was alone and just trying to keep to myself. Unfortunately, I was seated next to an extremely chatty soccer mom-type yuppie woman. That wouldn’t be so bad– I don’t have any objection to friendly people– but for her insistence to steer the conversation first toward how fabulous her life is (yes, please, tell me more about how much you love your Mustang) and then toward her interesting personal views.

I had to spend about half an hour listening to her elaborate explanation of why she objects to interracial relationships. None of her arguments were particularly rational and they seemed to be mostly coming from bigotry, but I was in no mood to get into a political argument with a stranger on an airplane, so I tried to ignore her.

Why would she feel the need to annoy a captive stranger with their controversial racist opinions? That’s well outside the boundaries of common courtesy. Then again, being a chatty braggart is also outside the boundaries of common courtesy, so she probably figured adding one more unpleasant element would be fine.

What I find surprising about this particular story, is the use of the word "yuppie"… I haven't heard that in common speech for years 😉

I think you missed an opportunity to let her know, respectfully, that you disagreed with her opinions and felt they were rather bigoted.

It sounds like her hubby doesn't give her enough attention at home

While I was in Vegas over the weekend, I was seated at the blackjack table next to a a guy who couldn't stop talking about how Obama was a socialist antichrist and he was really Muslim, and how the (N-word signifying a member of one of Obama's races) were out to get all the white people. The only reason I can figure out why he decided to pick on me is because bigoted white guys assume that all white guys will agree with them. Like our author here, I was trying to ignore him out of politeness, but I finally had to tell him that I didn't agree with what he was saying, it was racist and besides he was ruining my concentration.

But the BEST reply I ever heard in such a situation was my college room mate. We went to school in Orange County (behind the orange curtain, we called it). We were constantly besieged by solicitors coming to the door – in this case it was a Young Republican/Bircher/ Jehovah's witness type (don't remember with whom they were affiliated, but they had the white button down dress shirt/black slacks thing going). I'd normally just tell them not interested and shut the door. But my room mate enjoyed f'ing with people and would say anything to anybody. After listening to this guys spiel about the evils of being gay for a while, my room mate said to him: "I agree with you! Man on Man sex is gross! Now me, I like to have sex with dogs! Do you have one with you?"

Watching the color drain out of the guys face and him backing away from the door was priceless.

My cousin and her roommate (both women) used to answer the door on Sunday mornings when the Jehovah's witnesses came calling… naked, and with their arms around each other…

They never saw the same pair of callers twice…
