Passenger Fusses Over Change Of Seats

in Passenger Stories

During the summer of 2005 my son was in a serious accident while serving in the Navy. Serious meaning 2 weeks in ICU, another 4 in the Medical Center and then another 2 in rehab. When the doctors authorized me to take him home, I purchased first class tickets – for the extra room.

We were unable to get assigned the seating immediately behind the galley and were assigned seating by the door. The attendants were wonderful; we boarded 1st, and noting that he was wheelchair bound – broken back, femur, and pelvis – they assisted him from the wheelchair to the bulkhead seat rather than the seat in front of the door.

The problem was… the passenger whose seat we had “traded” with. This “man” put up a fuss through the entire boarding process and flight about how “he shouldn’t be required to move seats.” The attendants and I could only look at this man with disgust.

hey first of all i hope your son recovers soon and successfully!

i believes he deserves the highest respect serving the country (doesnt matter what country, the army/navy etc all fight for their peoples liberties) and they shouldn't have to be verbally attacked by people who are selfish or only see what they wanna see and here…even if you disagree about the war(s) the soldiers and men/women who put their lives on the line shouldnt be treated like dirt and put blaim on them, they earn respect

even if the guy had no idea your son was in the armed forces (NAVY) but could see your son physcially than he should understand and not complain about it, he was just being an obnoxious jack***

I hope that rude passenger gets cancer and dies.

I hope your son has a speedy and full recovery. I’m sorry you had to put up with this other guy, but I’m glad the FA’s were kind enough to make the switch without asking him.

My wishes to your sone, and your family for his quick and full recovery. His sacrifice is a gift to us all.

As for the grumbling passenger, it's pathetic that someone traveling in first class would even think to complain. They should have thrown him back in coach.

The inconsideration of some people is simply amazing. That guy should be ashamed of himself and his behaviour, and if anyone ever tried a stunt like that on an airplane I was crewing, I'd do everything I could to make sure that individual was given the privilege of taking the next flight. People like that aren't welcome on my airplane.

I don't always agree with you, SAW, but this time I'm on board… I can't imagine someone looking at this poor guy, seeing the state he's in, and having the nerve to complain!!!

Seat poaching is a problem even if you have a legitimate reason as in this case. The GA should have discussed this with the original passenger rather than just letting them discover it on the plane.

Very poor management by the airline and they deserve to be told they didn't handle it appropriately in this situation.

Wow, PH, seriously? I mean–… seriously? The guy was -severely injured-, and recovering, the grumbling passenger could have (and should have) been more gracious.
