Vomit Chain Reaction

in Illness/Medical Stories

About 6 years ago I was on a flight from Orlando to Atlanta. The weather was bad and getting worse. To everybody’s surprise we taxied down the runway and took off. Everyone was happy thinking we were the last plane to depart. About 15 minutes into the flight it started getting rough. The pilot asked everyone to be seated and discontinued cabin service. As the flight attendants were taking the cart back the plane dropped and the cart had flipped over blocking the isle. A person jumped up and ran to the toilet. I was sitting in the last seat, by the restroom. I heard her getting sick. A few moments later she came out looking pretty rough. Halfway down the isle and close to her seat she got sick again, all over the place. It started a chain reaction and about 10 people got sick from the smell.

Remember the cart in the isle? One of the attendants could not get back to her seat! She came back and asked if she could sit in my lap. She had a seatbelt extension. As we sat there the smell was drifting. I would say that at least 10 more people got sick, most in the airsick bags supplied. I, nor the attendant sitting in my lap, was as lucky! Once the smell got to me I only had seconds to react. I could not reach the bag in time! I got sick all down the back of my ‘lap companion.’ I hope I never see her again and I am sure the reverse is true.

Signed, Ron

Damn. That's a lot of people with weak stomachs.

You'd think a flight attendant would go for the jumpseat in the cockpit rather than "sit on a passenger's lap"… sounds fishy to me.

SAW: did you miss the part about the FA not being able to pass the beverage cart in the aisle? Kinda hard to get to the cockpit…

I have to call the BS card on this one – there is no way a female flight attendant would sit on the lap of a man she didn't know. In addition, if the flight was rough it would be far more difficult to keep your balance sitting on someone's lap than it would be to just sit on the floor, seat belt extension or no.

BS FLAG!!! There are jumpseats in the backs and fronts of planes. Theer is also no way that a cart would be left in the aisle. Nice try, better luck next time, thanks for playing.

LoL I agree with everyone else, but lets analyze.

Being that I reside in Orlando I know that typically the storms are short lived in central florida, and usually if a plane does take off its about 2-3min to get above 10k ft, once your above 20k you typically wont hit storm turbulance because they dont fly through the storm cells. My two cents, but moving on.

If the flight was as choppy as you say they wouldnt have started the beverage service. To that notes the aisle are between 17in -19in in width. a Beverage cart is 14in, by physics it cannot flip over in the middle of the aisle. IT could probably lean on one set of wheels resting against the seat but cannot flip side to side, and since the bulk of the weight is centered, it couldnt flip forward or back either.

Lastly, a flight attendent will not ask a passenger to let another passenger sit in their lap. They may have asked you to move but not the other.

YAY for you and lack creativity, next time you want to tell a story and try to sell it as real events take some due care and work out the scenario before pen to paper.

I was flying down to Jacksonville, Florida, the day that the space shuttle " Challenger " exploded on television all morning long on replay. Travel being what it is ( was) my wife and I had arrived at the airport two hours early. I hit the bar (jack and coke). Needless to say, I was a nervous wreck !!!! I saw it in the stars that I was doomed if i stepped onto a plane, but had to go.
When the Military tells you to fly, you fly. As we taxied down the runway……… I turned on the overhead twisty fresh air thingy, and looked out the window. To my Horror, it was a sister ship "Atlantis" parked on the tarmac, heading to the Smithsonian 🙁
I needed a double, and as soon as we hit altitude, I had the stewardess gainfully employed.

before long, with the wife bitching in my ear , I was a chunka chunka burning love. 24 people barfing on a 4 1/2 hour flight is totally possible. I bet i wasn't the only one afraid of flying that day 🙂 peace.
