Should I Call My Husband Now?

in Weather Stories

I was travelling between Louisville and Chicago – left Louisville on an early morning flight. There was a huge thunderstorm between the two cities. As we got close to Chicago, the turbulence was horrible. I really thought this was it – that we were all goners. The pilot had the flight attendants and passengers remain seated for about the last 45 minutes of the flight. We landed safely and I thanked the pilot as I left the plane.

On the return trip to Louisville that afternoon with the same flight crew, the thunderstorm had moved South, toward Louisville. I knew I should have spent the night in Chicago! Anyway, as we got close to Louisville, the pilot had everyone return to their seats – we were going to hit a little bit of turbulence. Not a minute later, the pilot came back on the speaker and said “Everyone sit down NOW. It’s going to get really damn rough up here.” About that time, a flight attendant was walking down the aisle close to me. She went flying into the air and landed on her butt on the floor next to me when the turbulence hit. She grabbed the armrests on either side of the aisle and stayed put. I looked at her and asked – “So should I call my husband and tell him I love him?” She cracked up laughing – probably from stress but it did help ease the tension of the passengers. Obviously, we made it home safely.

I love the "Should I call my husband now". It brings back memories of a couple of flights that I've had in the past.

What you don't realize is that this is the same flight mentioned above (SOAKED FROM A LEAKING RESTROOM)

It wasn't the RESTROOM leaking!

I was on a flight like that once where the turbulence was brutal. During it, one passenger remarked, "If you can hang on for 8 seconds you win 50 grand." Everyone busted up laughing, including the flight attendant.

The best part about turbulent flights is the applause and cheering at landing. Glad you didn't die.

Amen, Laura. Been on a few flights where we all clapped at the end.

i had a simaler experience from chicago to indy. about halfway through, the turbulence was the worst i have ever known. i looked outside the window to see the wings bending back and forth almost like a birds wings. adding to the issue was the noises inside the plane. you could hear all these clacking sounds of the plastic paneling smacking and claping against itself and the very strong diagonal up/down left/right and everywhere in between drops and rising of the aircraft in the turbulence. if you had not been belted in your seat, you would have gone for a flight of your own inside the plane. i remember when this started, it got eerily quiet onboard and i am suprised no one freaked out. i nearly barfed and the guy sitting next to me had the biggest bug eyes of fright i have ever seen!

it was a short flight but not short enough!
