Troubles Over The Bayou

in Airplane Stories

Many years ago, I was on a quick flight from Tampa Fl, to New Orleans. Only a short time in the air. My mother and sister and I crammed ourselves into the tiny seats in the fully loaded plane and enjoyed an uncomfortable but to-be-expected flight…till it was time for us to land.

The pilot came on over the intercom to tell us that we were going to be delayed in our landing due to congestion at the busy New Orleans airport. I looked out the window and noticed, at least from my view, that I didn’t see the airport anywhere close, but I did notice that we were circling lower and lower over an empty New Orleans bayou. Then you could hear a mechanical sound and a thud. I’m not a mechanic or a pilot, but I came to the amateur conclusion that they were having difficulty getting the landing gear down; I can only assume it was stuck.

The plane had been a quiet buzz of normal chatter till this noise had been heard repeatedly over and over. Then everyone began to fall silent. Then the real terror hit… the smell of burning electrical equipment started to fill the cabin from those little round vents overhead. The air blowing from them became warm and the burning smell got more intense as we circled lower and lower into the abandoned bayou. Needless to say when we did land, thankfully, I had to use the airport facilities to change my shorts.

Great job pilots. Not even close to being a flight from Hell.

Hey, Shakinthefat? Have you ever considered another career? It seems that you work in the airline industry yet have no empathy whatsoever for passengers' concerns. Not the kind of attitude I'd like my flight attendants/pilots/customer service people/etc to display.

Lauren,

Shakinthefat isn't being insensitive………..he's just an empty headed idiot who offers lame comments on most everything. As far as being an industry insider goes; this clown lacks the basic intelligence required to perform any job related to the airline industry. Except for sweeping up and emptying the garbage.

I've flown a lot and don't have a fear of flying, but if I were on this flight I'd have been pretty concerned.
