Pungent Perfume And Dirty Diapers

in Baby & Kid Stories

On a long, long flight from Amsterdam to Singapore about 10 years ago, I was seated next to a very pleasant Vietnamese woman who was going back to her native homeland for the first time in decades. With her was her 2 year old granddaughter. After about 45 minutes into the flight I noticed that the girl had soiled her diaper. Not a problem I thought… I have kids and she just needs to be changed. No, no, no… For the next 10+ hours she did not in fact change the diaper, but simply from time to time poured some really bad perfume down the child’s rear end, immensely compounding the problem. It was everything I could do to keep it together having to endure this awful bouquet that was now overly pungent.

Poor child, that must have resulted in some major discomfort and diaper rash.

That is horrible! What a terrible person to not change that poor little's girl diaper. Makes me cringe to hear that she sat in it for that long!

And shame on the poster for not informing the FAs, they have diapers onboard, and even if the knuckeheaded poster and the grandmother didn't know how to change a diaper, the FAs would have helped. Poor kid … 10 hours !

I posted and in fact had no idea that they would have diapers on board or I certainly would have offered it to her. I have changed MANY diapers although I don't know as a male, that I would have insulted the grandmother in offering to do it for her female grandchild, insinuating that she was negligent. I think it was a perhaps a cultural thing or in her age, just didn't notice. I was too much from the rest of us though.

It's highly probable the OP had no idea airplanes carry diapers for parents who neglect to bring any.. Which doesn't say much for the parents. But I'd definitely imagine that if the OP knew about the diapers, he'd have told the FA, rather than suffering silently for over 10 hours.

However, the flight attendants themselves would have known about the diapers. The smell accumlating in the airplane would have indicated that something was amiss with someone's diaper, so why didn't a flight attendant offer the grandmother a diaper along with instructions as to changing a baby in the airplane bathroom?

As for Anonymous above me, congratulations for knowing that there are diapers on board, how you must applaud yourself and look down on the rest of the world from your pedestal in the clouds. Maybe you forgot your baby's diapers at one point when travelling, and were saved by a kindly FA, who probably thought what an awful parent you were for forgetting something as vital as diapers. And rightfully so.
