Missing Ticket Troubles Traveler

in Passenger Stories

I was returning from the Bahamas to Washington, DC and decided at the last minute to upgrade to first class for $150. As I made my way on the plane I noticed a woman sitting in my seat. I asked her to check her ticket as I was pretty sure she was supposed to be sitting on the aisle side. She did and apologized and grabbed her belongings and moved over. No harm, no foul.

As I got comfortable and set my own items on the floor, I got a good whiff of booze. I was surprised because it was early noon but figured she wasn’t done with her vacation. Or maybe I’m not used to a young, attractive, well-dressed woman reeking of alcohol like a street bum.

We ended up chatting during most of the flight and she invited me to stay in her villa “should I ever find myself back in the Bahamas.” Around this time the captain announced that we were making our descent to DCA. The woman reached into her purse and declared she was missing her ticket to connect to Los Angeles. She asked if I had her ticket. I said of course not, why would I have your ticket? I reached into my purse to show her when all of a sudden I spotted her ticket to Los Angeles.

She looked at me, horrified, and started crying. “Why do you have my ticket?” she said. Seriously, I had no answer because I was just as perplexed. Why was her ticket in my purse?

“I hope this isn’t your passport, too,” I joked as I flipped it open. Much to my dismay, it was! The look on her face changed from horrified to accusatory. Finally, after another crying spell, she said, “I am such a forgiving person. I’m so forgiving, and I forgive you.”

To this day I still have no idea why her belongings were in my purse. I guess that offer to stay in her villa is no longer valid.

The OP says the woman was reeking of alcohol. I wonder if it's possible, since the woman didn't sound as if she was very sober, that she put her ticket & passport in the OP's purse instead of her own.

Stranger things have happened when someone is under the influence.

Great story. I agree…I bet she put it in your purse by accident.

I'm glad she dropped it, and didn't seek action against you for theft.
