Smelly, Portly Passenger Pours Over Seat

in Portly Stories

Upon boarding an Alaska Air plane for home from Seattle to Los Angeles just after Christmas of 2008, I sat in my aisle seat and put my belongings away ready for take-off. A husband and wife came along to take their seats in my row as well, whereupon it took the very, very large woman a very long time to get her big self seated right next to me in the center seat, her slim husband in the window seat. She fished and fished around for the seatbelt while I seemed to be helping her try to do everything. It came as no surprise that the seat belt, fully extended, could not fit around her girth and she kept raising her hand trying to get the attention of a stewardess. Every time she raised her arm, a stench would engulf our area. The flight crew brought her an “extension belt” and we were off.

She poured-over half way into my seat the whole flight and even more so when she fell asleep, snored and relaxed. I at first felt sorry for her and her situation, but soon that wore-off. Clearly she needed to have purchased two seats just for herself and that HAD to be obvious to the whole crew as she boarded. They know when someone will not fit properly into a seat. Instead she used half of my seat and her skinny husband’s and stunk all the way home. Geez, I was miserable but the plane was full and I didn’t know what to do. I just sat there, holding a napkin over my nose trying not to breathe her stench through my nose, pushing her off of me and clearing my throat loudly to try and wake her when she fell asleep on me. Never again; next time I will find a way to tell a steward and pray that they can do something for me.

Boring and unoriginal. Some people, both fat and thin, have body odor problems. Plane seats aren't large enough for some people. We get it.

And it's not a "seatbelt extender." It's just a seatbelt extender.

MJ, he didn't say "seatbelt extender".

Flight from hell, yes. Next time, not much you can do about it, though. If the flight is full, they aren't going to kick someone off the plane.

MJ sounds pretty defensive…I suspect s/he is overweight and smelly and has probably been called out for it.

Wow, a troll. How scary. I'm shaking in my boots at some stranger on the internet calling me fat.

Half the stories on this site are the same thing. It's boring to read them over and over again. This one wasn't even especially interesting or compelling in any way.

MJ, for the poster, it was a flight from hell. Maybe crudely described, but a flight from hell for the poster. Don't you agree that larger passengers should pay for a pair of seats in a situation like this? And many of the stories do have the same theme but, if a person that is large buys 2 seats, the overweight postings would drop markedly.

No, I don't believe that select people should be forced to pay more than the rest of us to fly. I think that the airlines themselves need to find a solution that doesn't further stigmatize people who are already treated like crap.

MJ is totally a fatty, nobody else would be so damn defensive. Fatties should buy two seats because they're sitting in two seats.

The solution would be bigger seats, which means fewer seats and everyone pays more on behalf of a few. Seats can be tight and I'm not the smallest person in the world but I manage to squeeze in and not take others space. Squeeznig out others isn't fair (or fare) either. And you can see that even though a lot of posters kick in unneeded descriptives to express frustrations, this is a legit issue.

Extra Large people need to buy two seats or not go anywhere. They should not be allowed to inconvience others due to the fact that they spent a better part of their lives sitting around and stuffing their faces.

MJ, your a twit. Lardos weigh twice as much as an average person, take up two seats, and will eat 32x the food. It's only fair they pay double.

I agree with MJ. I don't think larger people should be asked to pay for 2 seats. They should be offered two seats at the same price if they meet certain weight criteria.

Likewise, skinny people who fit 2 in 1 seat shouldn't be asked to pay for 1/2 the fare either.

And I don't think MJ is fat or smelly. Why do you have to attack a person like that?
