Indeed, if all it takes is a tad.

Even earbuds can be irritatingly loud to those in a confined space, as many people who use them don't realize how high the volume can go.

I am certain the author of the story meant that they had headphone or earbuds and they were not playing it for the whole cabin to hear.

A tad of common sense can go a long, long way.

I agree! I love train travel. Unfortunately Alberta isn't set up the way that Ontario (where I grew up) is ... so I haven't used a single train in the 3 years that I've lived here. :(

I really, really don't get economy, business, business1st, 1st class, or any of the other iterations. 6 inches more leg room doesn't really mean first class in my mind. 1st class would be an on-board gym, with trainers, or a walk-up bar (like some trains I've been on), that allow you to retire to a demi or full sleeper cabin on long trips. Now that's first class.

1st class isn't hot towels. What the f*** do I need a hot towel for? (a la Seinfeld). I find it interesting how small the incremental expectations are, how small the differences really are, between economy and 1st class. We are trained like monkeys to see ANY small improvement as somehow notably better than the cattlecar that is economy (2nd class) flying.

Most domestic flights occur on airplanes that aren't designed to have a proper, defining, notable difference between subway-car-style seating (little more than grab the silver rail and hold on for dear life) and luxurious, spacious seating with menus.

If we got out crap together here in north america, we could have an excellent network of passenger rail service that would compete favorably in any market where flights last less than 3 hours. A couple hours in a security line, then a couple hours trapped in a tube, basically unable to move, or a tube that is wide, allows you to move, walk, talk, even switch seats if one is available......I love my train travel, and use it every time possible, over air travel.

The only thing you get nowadays, it would seem, while travelling first class on most airlines, is a larger seat. That's just about it....

I understand that noise was an issue, but would be more sympathetic with a 96 year old (wo)man who had been awake for 36 hours.

That you had Metallica cued up tells me noise is not a problem for you. One job, starting at 3:30am, required Metallica on the way to help me wake up. As a matter of fact, Metallica is not easy listening, and I wonder how many people you irritated without realizing it.
