in Seat Stories

I was traveling on a short flight (about an hour and a half) with my 9 mo. old daughter in my lap. When I bought the tickets online, I did mark that I would be traveling with a small child in my lap. I ended up being assigned an emergency exit row seat. When I boarded the completely booked plane, the flight attendant told me I couldn’t sit on the exit row with a child in my lap, so I’d have to switch seats with somebody. I had no problem with this. A guy in the row in front of me offered to switch saying he didn’t mind sitting next to the emergency exit. This kind man was traveling with his wife and kids who were all seated in the row now in front of me. Since I was in front of the exit row, my seat did not recline. I didn’t care either way though as it was a short flight and there was no way I’d be sleeping while holding my baby.

As we’re waiting to take off, the little boy in front of me reclines his seat. His mother tells him he has to put it back up because we haven’t taken off yet. I was really hoping once we did take off, the little boy would forget about the recline feature. He did not. The entire first half of the flight he put his seat up and down, then up and down again. It was really annoying as we had the tray down to hold our drinks/snacks and my daughters toys. Almost every time the tray would end up hitting my daughter. At one point he slammed it back so hard it spilled my drink. His mom told him to cut it out a time or two, but he wasn’t listening. Finally he put it back and left it even though he was leaning forward in his seat to play with toys. When he finally sat back to calm down, I didn’t feel the least bit bad about letting my daughter smack her hands on the tray and pull on the top of his seat. I could tell it was bothering the boy; however I might have cared if he hadn’t repeatedly caused the tray to hit my daughter and spilled soda all over my leg. He finally whined to his mom that “that stupid baby is messing with my seat.” His mom just snapped, “then put your seat up!” He finally put it up and left it up; I couldn’t help but smile.

Ugh, I hear you. Some parents have the decency to keep their children from being so inconsiderate, you seemed to have lucked out. Others are ill mannered & indifferent.

So sorry for your child and your pants. You should have brought one of those metal babies which have claws and put it on his head. So sorry for you.

The baby isn't stupid, it's the boy who is! He has to learn not to be a pain to the other people he shares an airplane and the earth with!
