Annoying… that brings up an idea…

What if all the seats on planes were "ejector seats", and if a 2/3 majority of the people within 10 rows voted "annoying", that person gets dumped out at 30,000 feet.

I'd be all in favor of cell phones if that policy accompanied them

Yes, people on cell phones are much louder than they are in face-to-face conversations. There are also those who are trying to conduct business on the phone, buy or sell stocks, they can get pretty annoying.

For some reason – and I don't know if you haven't noticed this or not, there's a phenomenon with cell phones – the speaker seems to have to speak louder than he would just talking to you. And also – people seem to think it's OK to have hugely animated personal conversations on cellphones in public. Neither of which is appropriate on a plane. If the conversations were the same volume – cool.

Personally – the lack of talking partners and quantity of strangers makes for a quieter aircraft in general. Remove that – and make it so that everyone can yap to their best friend… forget it – you won't be able to even think straight.

this is something I just dont get. Isnt a conversation a conversation regardless of who is doing the talking? If a person is on thier cell phone or talking to another person, anyone around is going to hear it. Are we next going to ban people talking to each other just because you are within ear shot? I have been annoyed with peoples conversations around me who are not on any phone does that mean that they should not be allowed to talk?

I'm with all of you, definitely ban cell phones usage while planes are flying! It's annoying enough having to listen to self-important people at the gate — but at least there you can get up & walk away.

If they start letting people talk on cell phones while planes are in the air, I won't fly anymore. That would be the last straw. At least in the terminals you can try to find another place to wait. Based on some of the conversations I've heard over the years, I cannot imagine being stuck on a 5 hour trip with some folks yammering on their phones the whole time. SAW is right. Air rage would indeed occur. At minimum I imagine somebody's phone is going to be grabbed and crushed half way to Hawaii.

Me too!

I once had to sit next to a lady during a tarmac delay who who telling a friend on her cell, in great detail, what she had eaten for lunch, and which of those items were "repeating" on her. I already knew which ones they were, so it was redundant information.

I'll sign your petition – and I think the airlines are generally in agreement here too. Nobody wants to open that Pandora's box of air-rage waiting to happen…
