Survived A War – Injured Coming Home

May 7, 2009

in Odds & Ends Stories

My flight from Hell was kind of a series of adventures. I was returning from active duty in Iraq with my unit, returning home. We had to wait in a hooch tent for hours (the smart ones got some sleep in) then we were herded like cattle to our plane. Unlike previous flights, I got stuck in a middle row seat, but considering the circumstances, I didn’t complain.

Of course, I wouldn’t be writing if something DIDN’T happen, and in this case, it occurred just as we were in the home stretch. The movie screen for the in-flight was just above me. Just as we were about to land, the FA’s were taking down the screen…apparently one or both had butterfingers, because the next thing I know, a 10 pound sheet of plastic hits both my knees!

I’m pretty tough (in the military you have to be!) but still it hurt…it took a few minutes to walk it off after we deplaned. Needless to say….I’m either driving, busing or using the train the next time I go out of town, if I can help it!

Signed, William

You're definitely overreacting if you're going to try not to fly at all any more.

if thats the worst thing thats happen to you, then you need to get out of the military and fine a comfortable nursing home or the VA hospital to hang around.

What kind of plane has a removable movie screen? I've been flying for 40 years – never seen such a thing.

SAW: Probably the kind that you don't see unless you're on a military charter.
