Newlyweds Receive A Big Reception

in Couples Stories

In 2005, I married the most beautiful woman in the world, and we were set to honeymoon in Jamaica. We got on to a flight out of Atlanta – one shot flight to Jamaica. After about 15-20 minutes when they were supposed to be giving the instructions for flotation devices, we noticed a smell, but thought it was the latrine.

After another period of time, the captain came over the speaker with bad news. Keep in mind, my wife still had her wedding hair, and it being the summer, the majority of people on this flight were newlyweds still in their wedding hair. Captain came over and said “We’re over Orlando, and we need to turn around and go back to Atlanta.”

Collectively, a huge wedding groan was given because we all were looking to relieve wedding stress on the beaches of the Caribbean. Shortly after, we were notified that instead of Atlanta we were touching down in Miami. While we were never alarmed, and this story is certainly more humorous than hellish, we were received on the runway by a plethora of fire trucks, ambulances, maintenance trucks, and police cars that proceeded to dance with our plane around the runway and then follow us all the way to the terminal (quite the scene).

It ends up one of the TV screens had burned out and created an odor, and the good people of the airline took no chances, so kudos to you all, and forgive us newlyweds our complaints.

'we were all still in our wedding hair' is a phrase I've never heard before, and don't want to again.

I can't understand why the airline would turn around because of a blown out TV, BUT, won't do the same for sick passengers, (read some of the other threads)that are sneezing snot, coughing all over the other passengers!

They turned around due to the smell of burnt wires. The captain did the right thing. Sneezing is not a mechanial issue to turn the plane around or divert it.

You left out the most important part – did all the gals 'wedding hair' survive the trauma of your landing? I must know!!!

I thought the story was– quaint.

And I assume 'wedding hair' is a woman whose hair is still 'dressed' and fixed up all fancy-like from having been recently married and not received an opportunity to wash it and make it plain, again.
